When the Blues' defense is healthy, Ian Cole appears to be the odd man out. But the 2007 first-round pick is making that decision difficult to support these days. Cole recently played a stretch of eight consecutive games while Carlo Colaiacovo sat out with a hamstring njury. He came out of it with a plus-5 rating intact, but when Colaiacovo returned, Cole went back to being a healthy scratch. With Kevin Shattenkirk out sick Thursday against Anaheim, Cole was a late addition to the lineup. He responded with a goal, an assist and a plus-2 rating in the Blues' 4-2 win over the Ducks. Cole, 22, scored his second-career goal in the second period. He had an assist on a first-period goal by Chris Porter. Both players were late additions to the lineup. "That was really helpful," Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said. "Those guys contributed. They were in on a couple of goals... they really helped us." Cole is now a plus-7 on the season and hasn't had a minus-rating in any of his 11 games this season. "It's not the ideal situation ... you want to be able to get some consistency, some flow and know you're going to be going every night," Cole said. "But with where I am right now, I just need to be ready no matter what the game is, no matter what the situation is. Like (Thursday), have no idea coming to the rink, but just always be ready and hopefully get that chance." Cole's status for Saturday's game against San Jose won't be known until Shattenkirk's status is updated. Oshie's quick thinking leads to goal Goal scorers don't have a lot of time to think when they're barreling down on an opposing goaltender. But when T.J. Oshie found himself open for a shot Thursday night against Anaheim netminder Jonas Hiller, he kept in mind that Hiller was left-handed, making the far side on Oshie's attempt Hiller's stick side. "I just tried to get a shot off as quick as I could," Oshie said. "But Hiller is a different-handed goalie, so I wanted to try to shoot stick side as much as I could (Thursday), and luckily that one squeaked in." Isn't it Ironic? It was ironic that on the same day that former Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols signed a 10-year, 250 million contract with the Angels, the Anaheim Ducks were playing in St. Louis Thursday. The Blues players, many of them Cardinal fans, were aware of the day's big news and some joked after their 4-2 win over the Ducks that it was payback for losing Pujols. T.J. Oshie scored two goals and said afterward, "I got a couple of mentions about that on Twitter (Thursday). I guess that's just an added bonus for the fans." QUOTE TO NOTE: "Some nights, the glove is faster than you. That's what happened (Thursday). It was faster than the puck and I stopped all of the shots on the glove side." -- Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak, after Thursday's 4-2 win over Anaheim.
