Colorado Avalanche need their goaltending to be much better heading into playoffs

After the Colorado Avalanche seemed unstoppable for most of March, they’ve simmered down a bit in the past couple weeks. In their last seven games, they’ve lost five games, and that was capped off by back-to-back games over the weekend against the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars, where they were outscored 13-6 in the process.

Is this an Avs team finally showing it’s cracks, or is it just a cold streak at the wrong time? Frank Seravalli discussed Colorado’s play heading into the postseason on Daily Faceoff Live.

Frank Seravalli: I’ve been saying for a while that the one part of the Avalanche’s game that concerns me is their goaltending. Maybe some people will say that’s unfair because they won the Stanley Cup a couple years ago with Darcy Kemper having maybe the worst playoff run of any goalie to win the Cup, and they did it in spite of the goaltending. But it’s obvious that they’re going to have to button up their play a bit, there can’t be this much lack of detail and trading chances.

The other part is that this Avs team has this amazing quality of confidence to them that they don’t really blink when they’re down, so they’ve been an amazing comeback team this season. It’s just that you can’t really rely on that to save the day, especially when you’re dealing with the top quality competition in some of those teams like Dallas and Edmonton.

Of course, the Mikko Rantanen thing, everyone’s paying attention to that. How much did that factor into the results this weekend? You take a 100-point scorer out of your lineup and put them in concussion protocol and that’s going to change some things. But nonetheless, I don’t know if we saw some cracks from the Avs this weekend, or are they just some warts that have been there for a while that we’ve glossed over.
