BOSTON — The Colorado Avalanche almost certainly won’t win the Stanley Cup. There’s a good chance they won’t even make the playoffs. But it’s almost impossible to deny, even just four games into the season, that they won’t be a much better team than they were last year. That, of course, is not saying much. Colorado won just 16 games last season in the lockout-shortened season. Only the lowly Florida Panthers had fewer points than the Avs’ 39. For a team that was so dominant as recently as a decade ago, they had reached rock bottom. That’s when they decided to shake things up and start over. That’s when they brought Patrick Roy back to the organization. While the Avs are only four games into the season, it’s clear that hiring Roy was a pretty smart move. Colorado sits at 4-0-0 now atop of the NHL. Their wins, they’re not necessarily cheap. They have already beaten Anaheim, Nashville, Toronto and now the Bruins, who they defeated 2-0 at TD Garden on Thursday night. Of those four teams...

Avs place Hunwick on waivers

The Colorado Avalanche placed defenseman Matt Hunwick on waivers to make room for fellow blueliner Ryan Wilson the Denver Post reports. The 28-year-old hasn’t appeared in a regular season game for the Avs so it probably shouldn’t be too shocking that he was the odd man out. He collected six assists in 43 games last season for Colorado and began his time with the organization...

Which Player Was Traded to Colorado Along With Ray Bourque in 2000?

March 6, 2000 was a sad day in Bruins history, although it led to an amazing accomplishment for one of the game’s all-time greats. That was the day Ray Bourque was traded to the Colorado Avalanche, a move that eventually led him to finally win the Stanley Cup, the final accomplishment of a Hall of Fame career. However, he wasn’t the only one who went to Denver, though. Which...

Patrick Roy Bringing Intensity and Structure to the Avalanche

Patrick Roy has brought intensity and structure with him behind the bench. Getty Images When Patrick Roy was named coach of the Avalanche, how he would do was uncertain. Would the greatest goaltender of all time (sorry Marty) be a good coach? Shouldn’t the Avs look for someone more seasoned after the fiasco with Joe Sacco? The more Roy spoke, the more convincing he became. At his...

Cory Sarich enjoying rebirth of NHL career with Avalanche

Too old. Too slow. The game passed him by. Throw-in. Had to take him. Those were some of the unflattering things said about Cory Sarich when a trade sending him from the Calgary Flames to the Avalanche was announced this summer right before the NHL draft. He was a 35-year-old defenseman who often was a healthy scratch with one of the worst teams in the league last season. Expectations...

Avalanche tops Bruins 2-0 as Giguere shines in net

Jean-Sebastien Giguere was brilliant in goal for the Avalanche on Thursday night keeping Colorado unbeaten on the young NHL season with a 2-0 shutout of the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. Making his first start of the season Giguere was a commanding presence in upping the Avs' record to 4-0 stopping all 39 Boston shots. Yet — and this speaks perhaps to a new mind-set set forth...

Avs shut out Bruins to stay perfect

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 39 saves in his 37th NHL shutout, and the Colorado Avalanche stayed perfect with a 2-0 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. The Avalanche are 4-0 under new coach Patrick Roy, their best mark since the franchise relocated from Quebec to Colorado for the 1995-96 season. Giguere, making his first start of the season, made several sparkling...

Why no meeting or suspension for Steve Downie was the wrong decision by the NHL

As Roman Josi remains out indefinitely with a concussion, did the NHL get the call right by deciding not to have a hearing or to suspend Avalanche forward Steve Downie? Based on a frame-by-frame breakdown of video evidence, one would be inclined to believe otherwise. This evening, Brendan Shanahan of the NHL’s Department of Player Safety handed down a three-game suspension to...

Avalanche-Capitals Preview

While the Colorado Avalanche are off to their best start since relocating from Quebec, the Washington Capitals have been incapable of holding a lead. It’s Boston’s longest such streak vs. any NHL opponent. But like...
