With one Colton Gillies practice shot during Wednesday's morning skate, the Columbus Blue Jackets' goaltending situation went from perilously thin to almost comedic.Steve Mason, who has carried a heavy load in recent weeks with no proven NHL backup supporting him, was felled by a Gillies shot that left him with concussion symptoms only hours before a game against the Detroit Red Wings later that night. The Blue Jackets turned to rookie Allen York, who made his second NHL start, but that was the easy part. With no other goaltender under contract, the Jackets spent the next few hours scrambling to find a goalie they could sign to serve as York's backup, one who could make it to Columbus in advance of faceoff.Shawn Hunwick, who just finished his college career at the University of Michigan, signed an amateur tryout agreement with the Blue Jackets, then drove himself from Ann Arbor, Mich., to Columbus, about a three-hour trip."We had to get somebody in here by tonight, and he was available," Blue Jackets general manager Scott Howson said. "But we would consider signing him for the rest of the year, too."Hunwick, who was undrafted, was 24-12-3 with a 2.00 goals-against average and a .932 save percentage this season for the Wolverines.Mason will be re-evaluated Thursday, but Hunwick could finish the season with the Blue Jackets. Mark Dekanich and Curtis Sanford, signed to be the Jackets' No. 2 and 3 goaltenders this season, both are out with season-ending injuries. The Blue Jackets' day ended on a happy note, though. York stopped 29 of 31 shots vs. the Red Wings, earning his first NHL win in a 4-2 decision in Nationwide Arena. He entered the game 0-1 with a 3.04 goals-against average in seven games with Columbus.
