UMass Lowell may have been dealt their biggest blow of the offseason and it’s only been a few days since their season came to an end. Connor Hellebuyck has opted to skip his final two years of eligibility at UMass Lowell and join the Winnipeg Jets organization. Hellebuyck has signed a three-year entry level contract with the Jets worth $925,000 annually. Hellebuyck is the third River Hawk to depart school early for the professional ranks this offseason, following in the footsteps of Christian Folin and Scott Wilson who signed with the Minnesota Wild and Pittsburgh Penguins respectively this past week. The standout UMass Lowell goaltender will join the organization who drafted him in the fifth round (130th overall) during the 2012 National Hockey League entry draft. In two seasons at UMass Lowell, Hellebuyck has posted a 38-12-2 record with a 1.60 goals-against average, .946 save percentage and 12 shutouts in 54 games. He sits first in GAA (1.60), save percentage (.946), shutouts (12...

Wild gets lift from unexpected sources in win over Penguins

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- When the Minnesota Wild were making their run to the Western Conference wild-card lead in January without Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise, Erik Haula was playing a defensive role on the fourth-line and proving to be a vital contributor in his first NHL season. When Mikael Granlund suffered an upper-body injury on Monday, Haula's found himself on the second line...

Wild breathing a little easier after successful road trip

Mike Yeo saw the question coming and took a deep breath as he interrupted and asked the question himself. "Do I feel comfortable?" Yeo asked after the Minnesota Wild's shootout loss in Chicago on Thursday night. "No," Yeo said in answering the question, shaking his head and letting out his deep breath. Yeo, of course, was being asked about Minnesota's...

When Dany Heatley Sits, Wild Win

March, 29, 2014, Minnesota Wild win 3-1 against the Phoenix Coyotes, much maligned forward Dany Heatley is a healthy scratch. Wild fans rejoice. March 31, 2014, the Minnesota Wild win against the L.A. Kings 3-2. Again, forward Heatley is a healthy scratch. Is this a coincidence? Maybe. Ilya Bryzgalov Makes Ridiculous Stick Save on James Neal

Ilya Bryzgalov made a humongous big save on Saturday night on James Neal. It’s a wonder that Bryz made this sprawling stick save on his way to his second shutout in his last eight starts. The ex-Philadelphia Flyer goaltender has been playing great lately, taking over the starting job from rookie Darcy Kuemper and winning three of his last four starts. [NHL.com] The post Ilya Bryzgalov...

Minnesota Wild: Brandon Bollig Hits Zach Parise in the back of the head

Another night, another NHL player hit in the head by an elbow/forearm, there's no excusing this hit. The NHL needs to start protecting its players from predatory type hits, or we're going to have all of the star players on the shelf. This is unacceptable; please tell me why Brandon Bollig needs to hit Zach Parise in this instance, for one it’s from behind. That’s a penalty...

Bryzgalov and the 4th line help lift the Wild to convincing 4-0 home win over Pittsburgh

Charlie Coyle battles near the Pittsburgh crease. The last time these two clubs played one another the Wild was in the depths of despair.  Injuries were mounting, the team couldn’t seem to score almost at all and Minnesota Head Coach Mike Yeo was starting to feel the pressure and rumors started swirling that the organization may be looking to drop the axe.  The Wild were tired...

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) -- Cody McCormick had a goal and an assist and Ilya Bryzgalov stopped all 20 shots he faced as the Minnesota Wild beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0 Saturday night. Erik Haula, Mikko Koivu, and Stephane Veilleux also scored for the Wild, who maintained a five-point cushion over Dallas for the seventh playoff spot in the Western Conference. Bryzgalov posted his...

Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice drilled in head by puck, stays on bench (video)

Paul Maurice is like the Timex watch of NHL head coaches: He takes a licking and keeps on ticking. During Thursday night’s tilt between the Winnipeg Jets and Pittsburgh Penguins, Maurice was drilled right in the forehead by an errant puck that flew into the vicinity of the Jets’ bench. Chris Chelios’ son Jake trying to follow in legendary father’s footsteps

Chris Chelios is a Chicago Blackhawks legend. Seems oxymoronic but he’s a Detroit Red Wings icon too. Given all that he accomplished in Madison, Chris Chelios is pretty beloved by Wisconsin Badgers nation too. Jake Chelios is striving to follow in his father’s footsteps. To use yet another Ernest Hemingway pun, the son also rises; as Jake Chelios has signed with the AHL’s Chicago...
