The New York Rangers were embarrassed in the Eastern Conference Finals at the hands of the New Jersey Devils. The offense was anemic, to say the least. But while general manager Glen Sather may have some big plans on what he would like to add to the Blue Shirts through free agency and/or blockbuster trades, could a new CBA alter what actually happens in The Big Apple?

It is no secret that the Rangers have been linked to Rick Nash of the Columbus Jackets. While I still maintain that New York would be better off turning to the Anaheim Ducks to pursue a trade for Bobby Ryan, the team is likely to make a splash this offseason on offense.

Yet while Sather insists that he intends to be aggressive this Summer and possibly target Nash, Ryan, Alexander Semin, Ryan Suter or even Zach Parise (who says he has no desire to play for the Rangers), without knowing what the new parameters of a collective bargaining agreement could be, will that limit what the Rangers can actually get done?

The Rangers already have a fairly high salary cap number, so adding two top players this offseason may be extremely difficult without moving some other numbers off of the books at the same time. And if they just trade one big salary or player for another, is it still improving the team’s chances going forward?

Adding a player of Nash’s caliber may not be possible, depending on what a new agreement will look like. That would also eliminate Parise and perhaps even Suter. The Rangers could still pursue a trade for Ryan or consider signing Semin, but until a new deal for the NHL is reached, it may limit any deals the Rangers are able to make.

Player Review: Mike Rupp

Mike Rupp's first season with the New York Rangers was an adventurous one that left fans with mixed emotions when it comes to the big number 71. He has his positives and negatives, as every player does, but when you analyze his game as a whole, the negatives far outweigh the positives. But is that how an enforcer should be judged? Should he be compared to himself? That's...

How things might be different if realignment was in effect for the 2011-2012 season

For a while in early December it seemed like realignment was a done deal and the NHL landscape would look dramatically different for the 2012-2013 season. The players ended up vetoing a plan passed by the owners that would have reshaped the league, but realignment will again be a topic of discussion as collective bargaining negotiations get underway. It’s a good bet that the previously...

Steve Palumbo: The Anaheim Ducks Overplayed their Hand in the Bobby Ryan Fiasco

The piping hot rumors swirling around the Anaheim Ducks willingness to shop winger Bobby Ryan have cooled off just a tad. But, trust me the Ryan saga is far from over. Just days after Ryan's named came up again as possible trade bait, the news did not sit well with the Ducks star. The 25-year-old is coming off his fourth consecutive season of 30 or more goals and having already...

Bobby Ryan really, really wants out of Anaheim

“I gotta be honest with you. At this point, I don't care. Move me.."Those are some very harsh words for the Anaheim Ducks organization from Bobby Ryan. Now, Ryan has really made it clear that he doesn't want to be a part of the Ducks organization.I'll actually...

Angry Ryan to Ducks after trade rumors: "Move me"

The Anaheim Ducks' Bob Murray knew that having rival general managers call and make offers for his star winger could make it an interesting first day at the NHL draft. Murray didn't count on his winger lashing out and hoping that recent trade rumors would come true. It was an eventful first round as the Ducks pulled a surprise with the No. 6 pick by taking fast-rising...

Eklund: Ryan to Philly Rumors Heating Up Again

Contrary to what some have speculated following the Flyers' trade of James van Riemsdyk to Toronto, Philadelphia remains very much active in pursuit of Anaheim's Bobby Ryan. How to be the Sabres GM in three easy steps: Step 2 - Bobby Ryan or bust

It's so easy, even Bucky can do it. The title of General Manager of the Sabres is a hot commodity these days, I guess. Apparently there's a lot of people who think they could do a better job than Darcy Regier. It seems to be a fun enough gig, anyway. So, live from my mother's basement (I am, in fact, writing this from my mother's basement. It's nice and cool...
