Towards the end of last week, the Rangers waived Sean Avery once again. Avery has bounced between the Rangers and the Connecticut Whale this season, and when he’s been up with the Rangers, his impact has been minimal. It’s not his job, but in 15 games this season Avery has just three goals, no assists, and 22 penalty minutes. Oddly enough, the Rangers do have a better record with Avery in the lineup than without, but when you’re riding high as the no. 1 team in the Eastern Conference, that’s almost irrelevant. The most telling stat in Avery’s numbers this season is that amount of games played. He has just 15. He was sent to the AHL to start the season, called up, played most of November, and played just five games in the entire month of December. Most of that is due to the Rangers’ summer signing of Mike Rupp. With the likes of Rupp, Brandon Prust, and John Mitchell in the lineup, Avery really isn’t necessary given the type of role he fulfil...

Tortorella Right in Making Comments Against League

John Tortorella's New York Rangers may have won the 2012 NHL Winter Classic, 3-2, over the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday, but the coach left the ice enraged and would later share why during his postgame press conference. By now you all are well aware that the game's officiating was the issue that nearly ran Tortorella up a wall, and later would force him to make some comments...

NHL Fines Rangers Tortorella 30K

The National Hockey League sent a large message in response to the post game  comments of New York Rangers coach John Tortorella levying a $30K fine. Tortorella has since apologized for his statements claiming he was being sarcastic, but the league certainly didn't see the humor in it. That Tortorella was fined for questioning the integrity of the officials and even the...

Rangers’ Coach Fined $30K For Comments After Winter Classic

John Tortorella said that the officiating in the third period was “disgusting” and insinuated that the refs and NBC had conspired to send the game to overtime. Read more at Philly Sports Daily

Tortorella’s fine: $30,000

He got his money’s worth. Rangers coach John Tortorella knew he messed up as soon as he said the words about the referees and NBC conspiring to try to get the Winter Classic to overtime (see post below for the money quote). And whether he was being sarcastic (which I believe he was) or serious (doubt it very much), he will pay for it. Or Cablevision will pay for it. Somebody...

Rangers coach apologizes for 'tainting' Winter Classic

It won’t take a potential fine for Rangers coach John Tortorella to be sorry for his criticism of the referees following the team’s 3-2 Winter Classic win in Philadelphia on Monday. Before taking any questions from reporters following the Rangers practice on Wednesday, Tortorella requested the chance to...

Rangers' Tortorella fined $30K for Classic rant

New York Rangers coach John Tortorella was fined $30,000 for his postgame comments about the officiating in Monday's Winter Classic.

Price of success lower for Rangers

Couldn't have been many NHL teams more opposed to a salary cap than the New York Rangers. Can't be many who have benefited more from the league adopting one, either. Not because it leveled the league's financial playing field -- that's precisely what New York didn't care much for -- but because it forced the Rangers to re-think their approach to putting together teams.

Two Minutes in the Penalty Box with Chelley: The View From the Top is Nice

But the fall… oh the fall down hurts. 37 games into the season, the Rangers find themselves sitting pretty at the top of the Eastern League with 52 points.  They boast the best record in the NHL so far with24-9-4.  The only team somewhat close to that record isBostonwith their24-10-1.  The Rangers now have Gaborik [...]

Predator/Player Of The Month/Day

With the World Under-20 Championships coming to a disappointing end for both Team USA and Team Canada, our main focus turns back to the New York Ranger and New York Islander prospects and their teams as they get their 2nd half of the season. For Micheal St.Croix (NYR 2011 4th) then Wednesday was a very good day before he even took the ice. First the prospect we have nicknamed...

Rangers-Panthers in review

For all the complaining we (I) did about the outdoor game, it was a downer going back indoors, especially at the World’s Quietest Arena. What a shame. Could you imagine a first-place team in the middle of a season in the 1970s or ‘80s and the kind of intimidation MSG would throw at an opponent? Granted, you can never expect the Sunrise Panthers to bring out the same...

Rangers' Tortorella sorry for refs rant

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Too bad HBO's "24/7" cameras were packed up. New York Rangers coach John Tortorella had one final Winter Classic sound bite in the aftermath of his critical postgame comments following an otherwise ideal showcase game:

Slap Shot: Tortorella Apologizes for Winter Classic Comments

Rangers Coach John Tortorella said his comments about referees after the Winter Classic were meant to be "tongue-in-cheek."

N.H.L. Roundup: Rangers Start Slowly but Win in Overtime

Marian Gaborik’s goal at 3 minutes 29 seconds of overtime gave the Rangers a 3-2 victory, their eighth in nine games, against the the Panthers.
