Nov. 15, 2011 If I had a dollar for every Canadian media report thats surfaced the past three seasons regarding the sale of the Coyotes, I would have bought the team by now. This is not to disparage my cohorts north of the border not all of them, anyway but when you deal primarily in unnamed sources, rumor and innuendo, what you get is suspect journalism. The latest report surfaced today in The Toronto Star. According to the report, the NHL will either sell the Coyotes by the end of this season or the team will move. The NHL will not own the team past this year. The clock runs out this year, a source told The Star on condition of anonymity. Is this report accurate? Who knows? It might be, or it could be another attempt by the league to exert pressure on the City of Glendale to get this deal done after it backed out of a deal with Matthew Hulsizer (who might have reached an agreement to buy the St. Louis Blues, if you believe those sources) at the 11th hour. Or it could be a source whos speaking above his pay grade. Weve been told for months that there are two ownership groups in the mix, one headed by Chicago White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf, who has multiple Valley ties and business interests. The other is headed by former San Jose Sharks executive Greg Jamison. Both groups have already been pre-approved by the league; neither has completed a sale. The report says there are two more that have not gone public. Until league commissioner Gary Bettman publicly delivers an ultimatum, Im not inclined to believe any of these rumors. Too many supposed deadlines have passed without consequence or action. That would include a Dec. 31 deadline of this year, if this latest report is true. But given the vocal displeasure both Coyotes general manager Don Maloney and coach Dave Tippett expressed over the situation, following a four-game playoff sweep at the hands of the Detroit Red Wings, it is most certainly time for such an ultimatum way past time. -- Craig Morgan
