A league official tells The Associated Press that prospective owner of the Phoenix Coyotes is unlikely to complete a deal to buy the team from the NHL before a lease agreement with the City of Glendale expires. Barring a last-minute change, former San Jose Sharks CEO Greg Jamison won't have the money or investors in place to meet the midnight Thursday deadline for the lease agreement, the official says on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the situation. Jamison reached a 20-year, $324 million lease deal with Glendale last year that was reworked in November. The Coyotes have been run by the NHL since the previous owner took the team into bankruptcy in 2009.

Derek Morris attacks Ryan Whitney during Oilers' OT victory celebration (Video)

Phoenix Coyotes defenseman Derek Morris attacked Edmonton Oilers defenseman Ryan Whitney as he celebrated teammate Nail Yakupov's game-winning overtime goal in Wednesday night's 2-1 Oilers victory. Whitney got the assist on Yakupov's power play goal at 3:52 into overtime, but Morris thought the puck deflected off Whitney's glove, which would have been a hand...

Smith back in net as Coyotes visit Stars

The Phoenix Coyotes are probably hoping Mike Smith returns to form when he is back on the ice. Smith is expected to play for the visiting Coyotes on Friday night when they try to hand the Dallas Stars a fifth straight loss in the opener of a home-and-home set. Smith will be back for Phoenix (2-4-1) after missing four games with a lower-body injury. Jason LaBarbera and Chad Johnson...

Torres alters his thinking after suspension

Raffi Torres' game is based on force and fury, his hard-hitting style fueling his teammates and inspiring fear in opponents. But as he sat out for 21 games, the result of a suspension for hitting Chicago's Marian Hossa in last year's playoffs, the Phoenix Coyotes left wing had to rethink the way he plays, find a way to retain his aggressiveness and remove some of the...

Jamison unlikely to meet deadline for Coyotes

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Two league sources have told FOX Sports Arizona that it is unlikely prospective Coyotes owner Greg Jamison will be able to assemble the money and investors in time to meet a Jan. 31 deadline to purchase the club. If that deadline passes, Jamisons bid to end the team could be over. If that happens, the league could open the bidding process again to other potential...
