The Phoenix Coyotes ended San Jose's lengthy reign as Pacific Division champions in 2011-12, but the Sharks have shown that they may be ready to reclaim that crown. Until their most recent game, the Coyotes didn't have the look of a team that was poised to repeat. San Jose will seek to remain unbeaten in its home opener and might have caught a break if Mike Smith can't go for the Coyotes on Thursday night. The Sharks (2-0-0) had won four consecutive division titles before finishing one point behind the surprising Coyotes last season. Phoenix also made its way to the conference finals while San Jose was defeated in the first round of the playoffs and failed once again to make a long-awaited run to the Stanley Cup finals. The Sharks, though, have been ready for the start of this shortened season. After winning 4-1 in Calgary on Sunday, they jumped on Edmonton early in a 6-3 victory Tuesday. San Jose scored a franchise-record six goals in the opening period with Patrick...

Smith ready to get back on track vs. Columbus

The Phoenix Coyotes rode goaltender Mike Smith to the first division title in franchise history last season, but his struggles are a major reason why the Pacific Division champions are winless in 2012-13. A strong performance from their goalie has the Columbus Blue Jackets off to a surprisingly good start. Phoenix looks to avoid its worst start since relocating to the desert Wednesday...

CM Punk featured on Phoenix Coyotes goal tender Jason LaBarbera's mask

This is random: CM Punk is featured on Phoenix Coyotes goal tender Jason LaBarbera's mask. The Coyotes' Dave Vest tweeted out the above photo of the Punk helmet, which includes Metallica St. Anger fists. Pretty sweet to see a wrestler make a crossover impact. This isn't the first time LaBarbera has repped his WWE fandom. His masks have also featured Shawn Michaels...

Coyotes 5, Blue Jackets 1

PHOENIX -- Veteran newcomer Steve Sullivan scored a hat trick in his third game with Phoenix and goaltender Jason LaBarbera gave up only one goal in relief of injured Mike Smith to help the Coyotes to their first victory of the season, 5-1, over Columbus at Jobing.com Arena on Wednesday. Sullivan tipped in a shot from Derek Morris 10:01 into the third period to give the Coyotes...

"We got off to a good start," said Sharks coach Todd McLellan, whose club...
