Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith, center Martin Hanzal and left wing Lauri Korpikoski did not practice with the team on Monday. Phoenix coach Dave Tippett would not say if they would be available for Game 3 of the Coyotes' playoff series against Chicago on Tuesday night, only that they were being evaluated. Smith was injured in the second period of Phoenix's 4-3 overtime loss in Game 2 on Saturday when he was struck on the head by the shoulder of Chicago's Andrew Shaw. Smith lay on the ice for five minutes but finished the game. Hanzal went off in the first period with what appeared to be a lower-body injury and Korpikoski went out in the third after being checked hard into the boards. The series is tied 1-all.

Smith, Hanzal participate in morning skate

CHICAGO Coyotes goalie Mike Smith and center Martin Hanzal both took part in Tuesdays morning skate at the United Center. Coach Dave Tippett said both would be game-time decisions for Game 3 against the Blackhawks tonight at 6 p.m. Arizona time. Tippett ruled out forward Lauri Korpikoski, who did not skate Tuesday morning, with Gilbert Brul as his likely replacement. None of the...

Coyotes G Mike Smith back at practice

Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith was on the ice for Tuesday morning's skate, but a decision on whether he will play in Game 3 against the Chicago Blackhawks will be made prior to Tuesday night's faceoff. Smith was hurt in the second period of Phoenix's 4-3 overtime loss on Saturday when he was struck on the head by the shoulder of Chicago's Andrew Shaw. Smith lay...

Shaw ejected for leveling Smith; faces hearing

Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was ejected for leveling Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith last night. Smith came out to play the puck behind the net, and Shaw collided with the Coyotes netminder. It's hard to say whether or not Shaw did it on purpose. Either way he was given a game misconduct and a major penalty for charging. He will be facing a hearing today. Chicago...

Andrew Shaw Ejected After Taking Out Mike Smith

In Game 2 of the Phoenix Coyotes and Chicago Blackhawks playoff series, Andrew Shaw received a game misconduct after colliding with Phoenix goaltender Mike Smith. Smith stayed down on the ice for a while, seemingly in pain, but eventually decided to stay in the game, despite his concussion history. I’m having trouble deciding whether or not Smith deserves an Academy Award for...

Video: Shaw knocks over Smith

In the second period of Saturday's game in Phoenix, Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw ran into Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith behind the net. As Smith was playing the puck, Shaw skated behind the net, attempted to cause a turnover and barreled over Smith. The Coyotes goaltender was down on the ice for a few minutes before he stayed in the game. Meanwhile, Shaw was given a five-minute...

Andrew Shaw ejected for decleating Coyotes goalie Mike Smith

The Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw was ejected from last night's game for hitting Coyotes goalie Mike Smith. Depending on what angle you watch this collision from, it does appear that Shaw caught Smith with an elbow in the head. I think that Shaw could have avoided this collision and this was an unnecessary hit on the goalie who was playing the puck. There are other hockey...

Adam French: Overtime Overdrive

Going into the game the Coyotes were at a severe disadvantage in that they were without Martin Hanzal and Lauri Korpikoski while going on the road. Korpi is one of the teams best penalty killers and his amazing speed creates chances and turnovers. Hanzal has been te muscle and defensive awareness for the first line that was so successful all year. So losing two top players and replacing...

Coyotes mum on injuries; 3 players miss practice

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- The Coyotes were without forwards Martin Hanzal and Lauri Korpikoski and goaltender Mike Smith at Monday's practice in Scottsdale. The team practiced locally before boarding a plane for Chicago in advance of Tuesday's Game 3 in the NHL Western Conference playoffs. The series is tied at 1-1. All three players were banged up in Saturday's Game 2 of...

Coyotes-Blackhawks Preview

Phoenix goalie Mike Smith missed practice before the Coyotes took off for Chicago and his status for Game 3 in the rugged and physical opening-round playoff series was unclear Monday. Smith was peppered with 95 shots in the first two games, turning away 89 of them. Chicago scored in the waning seconds of each game, forced overtime twice and earned a split. Smith was also knocked...

Andrew Shaw Suspended Three Games for Charging Coyotes Goalie Mike Smith (Video)

Andrew Shaw learned on Tuesday what's not acceptable when it comes to hitting goaltenders. Shaw was assessed a major penalty for charging and received a game misconduct following the second-period hit. League disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan decided...

Hawks head back to Chicago tied with the Coyotes

The Phoenix Coyotes couldn’t pull away from the Chicago Blackhawks on a 5-minute major penalty to Andrew Shaw (who, perhaps accidentally, elbowed Coyotes goalie Mike Smith in the face), and after tying up the game late, Bryan Bickell ensured that the Hawks would head home from Glendale with a split:

Shaw - 3 Game Suspension

So the NHL finally made up it’s mind, hours before game time, and handed Andrew Shaw a 3 game suspension. This came after the collision with Phoenix Coyotes goaltender Mike Smith. Smith remained in the game, and finished it.  It’s as simple as this with with NHL, they want to make a statement as long as it is not a marquee player. The inconsistencies through out the last couple...
