The Coyotes signed defenseman David Rundblad, a restricted free agent, to a two-year contract on Monday. Financial terms of the deal were not announced.
There had been speculation that Rundblad, a native of Sweden, might opt for a contract in Russia, but the Coyotes were able to lock up the 22-year-old former first-round pick.
The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Rundblad played in eight games with Phoenix last year, recording one assists. He also appeared in 50 games with Portland of the AHL, totaling nine goals and 30 assists as well as a plus-eight rating. Rundblad led all Portland defensemen in scoring and ranked second on the team in assists. He finished eighth among all AHL defensemen in points.
Rundblad, acquired from the Senators in the Kyle Turris trade in 2012, has one goal and seven assists in 38 career NHL games. He was originally drafted by the Blues in the first round (17th overall) in 2009.
