Sidney Crosby had three goals and an assist and Matt Niskanen scored a tiebreaking power-play goal with 18.6 seconds left, lifting the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. Niskanen scored the game-winner from the top of the left circle. Crosby assisted on the goal. Crosby tied it at 3 with a knee-high re-direction of Rob Scuderi's shot 25 seconds into the third, and then put Pittsburgh in front when he scored from the right circle with 9:34 remaining for his third goal on the night. Crosby has a point in all five games this season. It's his longest point streak to start a season since a six-game stretch in October 2005. Alex Killorn got the equalizer for Tampa Bay with 3:02 to play. Valtteri Filppula, Steven Stamkos and Teddy Purcell also scored for the Lightning (3-2). Brooks Orpik scored for the Penguins (4-1), who lost 6-3 Friday night at Florida. Orpik stopped a 110-game goal drought dating to Nov. 21, 2011, when tied it at 2 just 1:50 after Stamkos' goal. The defenseman has 12 career goals in 636 NHL games. Tampa Bay took a 3-2 lead on Purcell's knee-high deflection during a power play with 4:18 to go in the second. Stamkos, coming off a hat trick in Thursday's 7-2 victory over Florida, gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead from the right circle at 5:11 of the second. Crosby tied it at 1 with an in-close power-play goal 2:14 into the second. NOTES: Pittsburgh D Kris Letang and RW Matt D'Agostini, both sidelined by lower-body injuries, practiced. ... "Mad Monday" With @MadChad412 (Sidney Crosby on pace to join elite company)

Welcome to another edition of "Mad Monday"! All the once again I"m not very mad about the Pittsburgh Penguins right now considering that they are 4-1 to start the season. That start is without key players such as Kris Letang and James Neal being out with injuries. In the Pens' first five games they've outscored their opponents 20-13. The Pens, overall, look...

Penguins Fights 2013-14 #3: Adams vs. Malone by @evil_shero

Oct 12, 2013 1pd 00:04 Craig Adams is a tough, tough, tough human but he hasn't "won" a fight in years. I guess it's the thought that counts, right? Right off the opening faceoff the two men drop the gloves and go at it bringing the crowd to their feet.  Not sure what made this happen as both men don't fight as often as they have once in the...

Pittsburgh Penguins cruise with three straight victories

The NHL season officially dropped last week, for Pittsburgh the season began last Thursday with Marc-Andre Fleury recording a 3-0 shut out against the New Jersey Devils.  Fleury had been on the hot seat this off-season with his ability to win key games. With back up Tomas Vokoun out at least 3-6 months, it is up to Fleury to show everyone that he can do the job.  He did do his...

Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Jeff Zatkoff will make his NHL debut against the Florida Panthers on Friday night the team announced. Friday night's contest is the first of a back-to-back which makes it the perfect opportunity to see what Zatkoff can offer the club. The biggest question surrounding the Penguins this season was the stability of starter Marc-Andre Fleury. Coming...

Penguins @ Panthers Recap by @ryannoble66

Last night was the home opener in Florida. On a night where Penguins fans expected the only surprise from the "Hello Kitty" Florida Panthers was going to be their new scoreboard over the ice surface, it turned out that the Panthers had more things to share than just a new red box over their ice surface when they beat the Penguins 6-3. Though, the box was impressive.  ...

QUICK CAP: Pens score late, win strange one in Tampa

Really strange game in Tampa for many reasons. But all of those reasons aside, Matt Niskanen's game winning goal is the story. Pens were on a powerplay, when Malkin put one in Niskanen's wheel house, and he poured it home with 18.6 left.   Other things that happened Crosby with a hat trick, Ryan Malone sucks, and the officating was a dumpster fire. Full cap in the AM.

Game 5: Penguins vs. Lightning Preview

The first loss of the season against a Florida Panthers team that the Penguins inexplicably always struggle against taught us a few things. First, Jeff Zatkoff is not very good. Second, the Pens need to teach themselves how to play from behind. And third, Craig Adams is scoring 82 goals this year. Coming off of…

Penguins pull past Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-4

The game was six months ago but Jon Cooper hasn't forgotten it. Sounds like it might be quite a while before he does. If ever. Cooper you see was just a couple of weeks into his tenure as Tampa Bay's coach when the Penguins visited Tampa Bay Times Forum April 11 and performed a 6-3 vivisection on the Lightning. "It could have been 16-3" Cooper said. That game...

Dear god, The dark world of Fan Fiction

So we linked to a article on Crossing Broad about Flyer fan-girls writing about getting slammed by Flyer players. Didn't really want to get far into it, but then someone tweeted us this:   @Pensblog you should read some of the Penguins fan fics out there.
