Found April 13, 2013 on The Prospect Park:
Tommy Hughes (OHL Images) It seemed kind of strange watching a team wearing Ranger colors losing a game and not having any problem with it. Yet in the only game played involving a New York Ranger prospect that was exactly the case on Friday night. Tommy Hughes (NYR UFA 2013) returned to the London Knight lineup after sitting out a 1 game suspension as his Knights defeated the Kitchener Rangers 4-1. The win gave the Knights a 4-1 series win as they advanced to the OHL Western Conference Finals for the 2nd straight year. Hughes was scoreless but a +2 as the young defenseman has all of 1 assist for the 2013 playoffs but scoring isn't the job that the Knights ask of him. They want him playing the John Tortorella defense AKA block shots and play a physical game which typically means Hughes doesn't see a lot of the spotlight. But what he does get to do is cross another digit off the docket. 8 wins down and 8 wins to go for the London Knights as they try to repeat as the OHL champions. Ranger prospects haven't earned many trips to the Memorial Cup in recent years but Hughes would help raise the number to 3 (counting Shane McColgan and Josh Nicholls of the Saskatoon Blades). In fact there is a possibility that a total of 5 Ranger prospects could play for the 2013 Memorial Cup which would guarantee that at least 1 Ranger prospect would wind as a Memorial Cup champion. That hasn't happened in a very long time and unless I am mistaken the last Ranger prospect to win it was in 1997 when then 1995 2nd round pick Christian Dube won it with the Hull Olympiques. Yes there are Ranger players like Dan Girardi who won it with the London Knights but that was before he became a Ranger or a Ranger prospect. Plenty of Ranger prospects have played for the Memorial Cup but fewer have won it. With the Knights win then it means that as was mentioned yesterday there will be plenty of time off before the conference or league semifinals get underway next Thursday. Oh and before I forget in the Knight's win was depending on your point of view saw the end of the series finish with a "cheap shot" or "classless celebration." What is interesting about this situation is before I show the clip I will mention the names involved since both players are the sons of former well known NHL players. For the London Knights it was Max Domi son of Tie and for the Kitchener Rangers it was Max Iafrate the son of Al. Now I wonder how many of you will prejudge the incident based on the fathers? Goal breakdown: Rangers steal two on the Island

Mike Stobe/Getty Images In his pre-game interview, John Tortorella was asked “what will it take to win this game?”. His response was that sometimes you can outplay the other guys and still not win. That’s exactly what happened tonight as the Rangers were able to escape Long Island with two points after being outplayed by a ridiculously fast Islander team. The 1-0 overtime win...

Brassard: I've never played in a game like this before

Not only did Derick Brassard have a ridiculous saucer pass to Dan Girardi to setup the overtime winner, he almost jumped over the boards when he celebrated... Here's Brassard after the game (via Blueshirts United)... “The atmosphere was awesome. Just to see our fans there like that was incredible. And the game was physical, fast, high-pace all night long. I&...

Rick Nash is Very Good

It’s been a while since New York has had a dynamic power-forward like Rick Nash.  The most recent comparison is Jaromir Jagar from his 52 goal performance in the ’05/’06 season.  Nash is not only a prolific scorer, but his 6’4″ 215 pound frame makes him nearly impossible to defend.  With 17 goals and 18 assists Nash is playing at a perfect point per game pace.  The...

Lundqvist, Girardi Help Rangers Defeat Islanders in Overtime Thriller

It has been a long time since a Rangers-Islanders game had a large bearing on the playoff race for both teams this late in the season.  Rangers-Islanders games are always intense and Saturday night’s game at Nassau Coliseum did not disappoint.  Evgeni Nabokov and Henrik Lundqvist were the stars of the show for over sixty minutes, neither [...]

Oh. My. McIlrath.

I have posted numerous videos of Dylan McIlrath going toe-to-toe with an opponent, but last night's tilt vs. Zack Fitzgerald during the Whale's 4-3 loss to the Adirondack Phantoms (Flyers AHL affiliate) might have topped them all... ...now that was a heavyweight battle. Absolute bombs being thrown by both of those guys. I cannot wait till McIlrath is doing that against...

Rangers outlast Isles in OT drama

Defenseman Dan Girardi scored 3:11 into overtime to give the New York Rangers a stirring 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Saturday night in a game that felt every bit like a playoff matchup between the area rivals. Henrik Lundqvist and Islanders counterpart Evgeni Nabokov staged a classic goalie duel that seemed destined to go to a shootout, but Girardi finished off a...

Ice time beginning to even out

Photo Credit: Jim McIsaac Last night’s game was one of the most hard-fought and entertaining games we have seen in the past decade. It was one of the most important games of this season, and possibly the most important game in the Rangers/Islanders rivalry in almost 20 years. This is the type of game where –given coach John Tortorella’s penchant for leaning on his most trusted...

Henrik Lundqvist Named 3rd Star of the Week

Henrik looks to be returning to his Vezina Trophy winning form from a season ago.  This is perfect timing as the rest of the New York Rangers as a whole seem to be following suit.  The team has steadily become more consistent showing signs reminiscent of last year’s Atlantic Division Champions.  The Rangers have always relied heavily on Lundqvist to win big games for them...

Rangers take 3 out or 4 points

Pittsburgh- The New York Rangers simply ran into a goalie suddenly turned hot. With a 2-1 shootout loss tonight to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the Rangers managed to gain 3 out of a possible 4 points in a home and home series versus the number one team in the Eastern Conference. They might not have had that same offensive fire-power they showed in Wednesday’s 6-1 route of the Penguins...

Biggest 2 Points of the Season

Nassau County-  The New York Rangers earned their biggest two points of the season tonight in a 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders.  In the most meaningful game against their longtime rivals in almost a decade, the Rangers gutted out the win for the two points in the standings.  Henrik Lundqvist continued his stellar play, and earned his first shutout of the 2013 season....

Who Should Win This Year's Steven McDonald Extra Effort Award?

Believe it or not, we're quickly approaching the final game of the season at MSG against the Devils on April 27th. Prior to the game, as has been tradition since 1988, former NY policeman Steven McDonald will speak and give out his Extra Effort Award, given out to the individual who "goes above and beyond the call of duty." Defensive stalwart Jan Erixon was the first...

Game 41 Open Thread: Rangers at Islanders

Been a while since a game between these two meant something. The Rangers are in Uniondale at the World’s Stickiest Coliseum to take on the Islanders in what will almost assuredly be a playoff atmosphere. The Rangers are 4-1-1 in their last six, but the Islanders are 8-1-1 in their last ten. Both runs have put the teams in playoff spots, although an untimely losing streak could...

Rangers-Islanders Preview

The rivalry between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders has lost some of its luster in recent years. That may be about to change. With the surging teams holding down the last two Eastern Conference playoff spots, the Rangers and Islanders close out their season series Saturday night at Nassau Coliseum. The Isles (21-16-4) have been one of the surprises of the league over...
