Entering the NHL draft this past week, the Dallas Stars were still lacking depth at center. After the draft, they were still lacking depth at center. The Stars’ only pick with significant experience at center was Jason Dickinson (29th overall), who also is listed as a left wing. This led to the idea that they will make up for their lack of depth via free agency. This afternoon made way for a blockbuster trade between the Dallas Stars and the Boston Bruins. Tyler Seguin shooting on Henrik Lundqvist. The Dallas Stars are acquiring Tyler Seguin (center), Rich Peverley (center), and Ryan Button (defenseman) in exchange for Loui Eriksson (wing), Reilly Smith (wing), Matt Fraser (wing), and Joe Morrow (defenseman). This allows two things to happen for the Dallas Stars; obtain crucial playoff experience in Peverley and Seguin, and acquire two centers to drastically improve their depth charts. Tyler Seguin is only 21 years old and has already been to the Stanley Cup finals twice (winning once). Seguin was the second overall pick in the 2010 NHL Draft. In Boston’s roster, Seguin’s offensive production was often limited after he was mainly held to the third line throughout the past season and playoffs. Seguin will need to step up as a leader with the Stars, as well as stepping up in the points department this upcoming season. With his quick, physical style of hockey, it’s expected that he will play on the first line of Dallas. Peverley also has playoff experience, which is something the Stars are interested in with the likelihood of a playoff run looking forward to next season. Peverley is also near 60 percent in the faceoff circle, something Dallas has had major issues with lately. Looking forward to next season Tyler Seguin has the talent to start on the first line. A possible first line would consist of Seguin centering with Valeri Nichushkin (2013 first round pick) and Jamie Benn. Peverley could easily step up to center the second line of the Dallas Stars next season. The loss of Eriksson will definitely be felt, being as he is one of the top defensive forwards in the National Hockey League. With all of the changes in the Stars organization from coaching to front office, this is another change that Dallas will adapt to for the upcoming season. The leadership and defensive mindset that Loui Eriksson brought won’t be forgotten, but the potential offensive dominance by Tyler Seguin may be remembered in the Big D for a long time to come.   Follow me on Twitter @JordanWalkerAKL Please fill out the contact field below to be placed on an email list for future articles written by Jordan Walker.  [contact-form]
