Canucks host the playoff hopeful Stars

The Vancouver Canucks were overdue for a dud performance and that is just what happened in their 5-3 loss on Saturday night to the Buffalo Sabres. Now the Canucks will try to get back in the win column against another desperate team fighting for a playoff position – the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night.

*NHL ATS Matchup Report*

The Dallas Stars come into Vancouver scorching – 6-0-1 in their last seven games and coming off a 3-2 shootout win in Calgary on Sunday night. Dallas currently sits in third place in the Western Conference but are tied with Phoenix for the Pacific Division lead.

They are just three points up on Los Angeles who currently lie outside the Western Conference playoff picture in ninth.

Needless to say, a win on Tuesday night is crucial for Dallas who have already beaten the Canucks in the last week and who will play Vancouver three more times in the next four weeks.

Dallas currently own the 14th ranked offense in the NHL but they have been getting solid performances from their offensive leaders during their impressive streak. Loui Eriksson has led the way with four goals and five assists in his last six games, Michael Ryder has seven points in six games and Mike Ribeiro has 12 points in his last 10 games.

Dallas is scoring goals in bunches at the moment and are certainly going to be a challenge on Tuesday night.

Goaltending has been superb for Dallas over the last couple of weeks. But Kari Lehtonen, who is 2-0-0 with a 1.44 goals against average in his last two starts will likely rest in favor of Richard Bachman who is scheduled to make his first start on Tuesday – advantage Canucks!

Vancouver is scuffing a bit but they still sit in second place in the NHL’s overall standings. One need not look further than the Sedins production over the last few games to figure out why the Canucks have cooled. Henrik Sedin is pointless in his last five games and Daniel Sedin has just one assist over that span.

The twins have fared very well against Dallas however – Henrik has 10 points in his last eight home games versus the Stars.

Vancouver can thank their secondary scorers for keeping them in games lately. Alex Burrows has been terrific and has three points in his last two games; Zack Kassian and David Booth each have two points in their last two games and the fourth line featuring Maxim Lapierre has made their presence felt with their physical play.

Roberto Luongo had a bad outing on Saturday night – three goals on seven shots before being pulled.

He is still 11-3-5 in his last 19 games with a 2.17 goals against average and a .929 save percentage. Lou is 8-0-0 in his last eight home starts versus Dallas with a sterling 1.84 goals against average however.

Look for Lou to rebound on Tuesday night – he is too good to suffer two straight letdowns in a row!

The Dallas Stars have not won in Vancouver since January 4th, 2009 – a string of five straight games. Dallas beat Vancouver last week for their only win against the Canucks in nearly two years – Vancouver outscored Dallas 20-5 in a four-game season sweep of the Stars last year.

It’s true that Dallas enters the game as one of the hottest teams in the NHL but Vancouver is just too strong on home ice to suffer back-to-back setbacks.

The Canucks got their bad game out of the way Saturday – look for a more focused Vancouver team to get back in the win column Tuesday.

Pick: Vancouver Canucks -180
