One of the league's worst cheap-shot artists, Daniel Carcillo, was suspended indefinitely after a brutal hit on Tom Gilbert. The play occurred when the two were racing for a puck and Carcillo can be seen shoving Gilbert from the goal line into the end boards. Gilbert was hurled foward and hit the end boards and needed to be tended to on the ice.
Karma got the best of Carcillo, who has already been suspended this year, when he appeared to hurt his knee on the hit. Honestly, this hit nearly made me sick. It's this kind of negligence that can get a player hurt or even killed. It's this kind of hit that gives the game a bad name and it's this kind of hit that is never excusable under any circumstances. I think if this happened to my teammate I would have jumped on Carcillo and started whaling away, even with him grabbing his knee on the ice. Maybe that way he'd learn that he can't run guys so egregiously.
A few things I do like in this incident is that the NHL is taking a firm stand on this hit. Carcillo's one of the few players in the league who serves no purpose but to get under the other teams skin. He gets paid to play on the edge and far too often skates over it. We don't need players this reckless in the NHL. Hopefully the indefinite suspension has double digits. I don't think anyone would mind if they didn't see Dan Carcillo on the ice for a long time.
Lastly, I like the Chicago fans reactions. A lot of lesser markets would have cheered the play but Chicago, being the smart fans they are, collectively gasped. Not even fans of the sweater can defend this infraction, nor should they.
