The highly-coveted defenseman out of Western Michigan has been meeting with NHL teams over the past few days. The Wings were among the franchises that sent a contingent to sit down with DeKeyser, a Michigan native.
DeKeyser is limited to an entry-level deal, so all teams could offer in reality was the promise of playing time. The 6-foot-3, puck-moving defenseman must have liked what he heard from the Wings.
Detroit has been overloaded on defensemen in recent weeks, following the contract extension handed to Brian Lashoff and the signing of Kent Huskins. The latter may be the odd man out now, with Kyle Quincey injured; Carlo Colaiacovo was just sent to Grand Rapids on a conditioning stint Friday.
DeKeyser could break into the Wings’ lineup almost immediately — Detroit has just 14 games left in the regular season and there is less than a week to the trade deadline.
BEST OF MAXIM
Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk has always been known to have a great sense of humor. Whether it is his practical jokes or his ring tone, he’s always been a character. Last night, the Red Wings had a night off and were able to go to the movies in San Jose. No word on what Pavel Datsyuk saw with his teammate Damien Brunner, but the photos he took with the Monsters...
This was supposed to be part of the Red Wings-Blackhawks set-up, but the entry took up too much bandwidth, so one must think on one's feet, even at 4 AM.
Amongst this morning's Red Wings-related topics:
Regarding the trade deadline: Ken Holland followed up his conversation with NHL.com's Brian Hedger regarding the trade deadline by stating unequivocally to the Free...
I know that my fellow members of the ever-twitchy Red Wings nation spent all of five minutes celebrating the Red Wings' signing of Danny DeKeyser before wondering what the team will do about Valtteri Filppula and whether the team can make playoff-strengthening moves at the trade deadline given Ken Hollad's comments to NHL.com's Brian Hedger (cue: Pavel Datsyuk's future...
The Detroit Red Wings signed former Western Michigan defenseman Dan DeKeyser to a two-year contract Friday.
The 23-year-old DeKeyser, from Clay Township, had two goals and 13 assists in 35 games this season for the Broncos and was selected the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's best defensive defenseman for the second consecutive year. He was a free agent after going undrafted...
This is not the news regarding a Red Wings defenseman that I was expecting this morning:
Wings assigned Carlo Colaiacovo to Grand Rapids for conditioning stint. He still counts toward their 23-man roster.

Red Wings assign Colaiacoco to GR for conditioning stint

In theory, the Detroit Red Wings and their fans should be happy as clams this morning. The Wings handed the Ducks back-to-back losses, took out the Coyotes, and, aside from Johan Franzen's "lower-body injury," mostly avoided the injury bug (see: Jakub Kindl taking a knee-on-knee hit and not getting seriously hurt) during their West Coast swing. The Wings took 6 of 8...
Sorry, I've been watching the game so this is making the rounds, but here's Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk dangling and dekeing Logan Couture out of his shorts on his birthday:
Thanks to HockeyVideoHD on YouTube for posting.
Per the Philadelphia Inquirer's Sam Carchidi, with Carlo Colaiacovo ready to return from his shoulder injury and the fact that the Red Wings signed Danny DeKeyser, the team needed to make roster room, and it's done so by trading Kent Huskins to the Philadelphia Flyers:
Flyers have acquired D Huskins from Det for cond. pick

Multiple reports started flowing in about 5 minutes ago, all with the same message, DeKeyser will be a member of the Detroit Red Wings.
George Malik of The Malik Report at KK will be all over it. Follow him as this plays out.
The Detroit Red Wings had little to get excited about during a 2-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday night, but Pavel Datsyuk’s incredible work on a first-period play against Logan Couture was an exception.
Datsyuk took a pass off the boards from Johan Franzen deep in the San Jose zone, then proceeded to pull off a crossover move on Couture that looked more appropriate for...
Hey, that's us! Highly sought after defenseman Danny DeKeyser has signed with the Red Wings. That whole “Noon decision” thing? Well, he may have decided at noon, but they kept a lid on it until closer to 5 ET. This is great news and we deserve to celebrate, but this signing is a bigger benefit to our future than our present situation. Still, Ken Holland gets to live another...
The Detroit Red Wings hope to sweep their Western U.S. road trip when they face off against the San Jose Sharks (10:30 PM EDT, FSD/CSN Bay Area/97.1 FM) tonight, but they face a particularly dificult task as the Sharks have handed the Ducks back-to-back losses, are desperate to improve their place in the Western Conference standings and plan on making good on game #2 of a 7-game...
The Detroit Red Wings face quite the task in attempting to both sweep their Western U.S. road trip against the San Jose Sharks tonight (10:30 PM EDT, FSD/CSN Bay Area/97.1 FM) and keep the Sharks off their backs for a simple reason: while the Wings spent Tuesday relaxing and Wednesday getting back to work, the Sharks did the exact same thing to Anaheim that the Wings did on Friday...

So just over a week ago I left the desert, and the world of hockey fandom, briefly to visit the Pacific Northwest. Brother was graduating college, which for me was probably my own personal peak of achievement so I was happy to share his with him. Very proud of the guy and I feel I need not mention I watched zero hockey whilst using him as a middle man to treat myself to amazing food...
