In another surprising turn of events tonight, although he lost out on being the Masterton Trophy winner, Daniel Alfredsson has won the NHL's King Clancy Memorial Trophy.

In the NHL's press release, it said:

Senators' Alfredsson Awarded King Clancy Trophy Ottawa Senators right wing Daniel Alfredsson is the 2011-12 recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, awarded "to the player who best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice and who has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution to his community." Returning from off-season back surgery for his 16th NHL season, Alfredsson was a key contributor to the Senators' successful Stanley Cup Playoff drive and was voted a 2011-12 Bill Masterton Trophy finalist for perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey. The NHL's longest-serving captain (1999-2000), Alfredsson was selected by his peers to serve as one of two team captains at the 2012 NHL All-Star Game held in Ottawa. In addition to being a leader and fan favorite on the ice, Alfredsson contributes to the Ottawa community through a number of initiatives. He leads the "You Know Who I Am" campaign for the Royal Ottawa Foundation for Mental Health, devoted to eliminating the stigma of mental illness. He provides a suite for each Senators home game to the Boys & Girls Club of Ottawa and supports a number of its events, including his role as title sponsor for ?Ringside for Youth," an annual gala that has raised millions to fund programs that reach out to kids living in at-risk communities. He supports the ?You Can Play" campaign, aimed at ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes without regard to sexual orientation, and takes his perennial leadership role in Senators annual events, including the Christmas visit to the Children?s Hospital of Eastern Ontario and Sens Soiree, the premier fundraising event for the Sens Foundation.

Congrats to the captain.

TSN highlighted some of Alfie's community work in this excellent piece that aired during the ASG.
