Danny and Carson Briere issue statements after bar incident
Jamie Sabau-USA TODAY Sports

It has been quite a month of March so far for the Briere family. First, former NHLer-turned-Philadelphia Flyers front-office member Danny Briere was in the news for the right reasons. He was named interim GM of the team after it fired Chuck Fletcher last Friday.

But earlier this week, Danny’s son, Carson, was in the news for all the wrong reasons. Carson, a 23-year-old forward playing NCAA Division I hockey at Mercyhurst University, was spotted in the security footage at a local bar committing a cruel act. In the video, which you can see here, Carson was seen pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs. The footage went viral Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, through the Philadelphia Flyers, Carson and Danny Briere issued statements on the incident to The Athletic’s Michael Russo.

From Danny Briere: “I was shocked to see Carson’s actions in the video that was shared on social media yesterday. They are inexcusable and run completely counter to our family’s values on treating people with respect. Carson is very sorry and accepts full responsibility for his behavior.”

From Carson Briere: “I am deeply sorry for my behavior on Saturday. There is no excuse for my actions, and I will do whatever I can to make up for this serious lack of judgment.”

On Tuesday night, Mercyhurst issued a statement on the incident via social media. “Late this afternoon, Mercyhurst University became aware of a disturbing video in which one of our student-athletes is seen pushing an unoccupied wheelchair down a flight of stairs at a local establishment. Our Office of Student Council and Department of Police and Safety are investigating.”

There has been no update yet as to what discipline, if any, Briere will face for the incident.

Mercyhurst currently sits in last place in the Atlantic Hockey Conference with a 7-14-1-7 record.
