Former Red Wing Darren McCarty was as tough as they come. He’d seek out contact and yearn for an opportunity to drop the gloves when an opponent picked on one of the Wings’ stars. He wouldn’t turn down a fight like he wouldn’t turn down an adult beverage. Since his hockey career ended, he’s faced different types of battles including some documented substance abuse and financial problems. Now he’s facing a battle that he doesn’t want to deal with. McCarty and his wife Sheryl sought out protection against four ex-friends are harassing them after failing to draw McCarty back into a partying lifestyle. Oakland Circuit Court records show that McCarty, 40, and his wife, Sheryl, 37, got personal protection orders last month against three Oakland County women and a Macomb County man for stalking and harassment. According to the Detroit News, the McCartys accused the four of trying to get the couple fired from their jobs, threatening both of them through text messages and phone calls, posting malicious comments on McCarty’s work and appearance websites, and threatening violence against them. McCarty now works for the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association. Sheryl is a nurse at Beaumont Hospital. Two two had originally filed a complaint with Royal Oak police in late April. The R.O.P.D. recommend they seek PPO’s against the four “delusional obsessed hockey fans” as Sheryl calls them. Darren supposedly dated two of the three women named in the court papers. He has four children and Sheryl has two from previous relationships. The McCartys also claim that the four people named: stalked McCarty at Joe Louis Arena and personal appearances, posted photos of his children on Facebook and spread a rumor that McCarty was selling drugs out of his basement, prompting a radio announcer to contact then-Red Wings captain Nick Lidstrom. It seems like Darren has finally started to get his life on the straight and narrow. Sheryl told the News, “I told him I would never date him until he cleans up his life and gets all the bad people out of his life and makes better choices. It took him a few months, but he did.” Darren said that he enjoys being home with his family rather than closing down bars. He is writing a book about his life on and off the ice. There are many morals to be learned here, but I think the key one that applies is that “you can pick your friends and you can pick your nose. But you can’t pick your friend’s nose.” And the four losers in this case will be punished by up to 93 days in jail if they try to pick McCarty’s nose.
