Kings general manager Dean Lombardi announced Tuesday that Darryl Sutter will be the team's new coach.
Sutter will assume his duties beginning with practice on Wednesday. The Kings also plan a news conference Wednesday to introduce Sutter.
The Kings fired coach Terry Murray on Dec. 12. Assistant coach John Stevens coached the team on its recent road trip, which concluded with a 3-2 shootout win on Monday in Toronto.
Sutter has a career head coaching record of 409-320-131 in 860 regular-season games. The 53-year-old Sutter last coached with Calgary in 2006.

Los Angeles Kings defenseman Willie Mitchell is expected to sit out Saturday's game against the Detroit Red Wings.
Kings coach John Stevens said Mitchell was doubtful to play due to a groin injury.

The Los Angeles Kings have all the ingredients to make a run at the Stanley Cup. They are deep up front, on defense and in goal.
But they are strangely adrift, as they proved while falling 8-2 to the Red Wings with interim coach John Stevens at the helm.
So new coach Darryl Sutter is positioned to become the difference maker. He will crack the whip on this talented and well-compensated...

I had to watch this one from my family’s Christmas party (it was lovely) with the volume off for over half the game, but I felt that the Wings’ 8-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings finished at such a lopsided score for a simple reason: around seven minutes into the second period, when the Wings would have been very happy to cruise along with a 4-1 lead, still shaking the loosey...

The Los Angeles Kings are expected to have their new coach in place later this week, which means John Stevens will get one final chance at the helm of the sputtering team.
Before Darryl Sutter takes over, Stevens will try to help the club bounce back from its most lopsided defeat in two-plus seasons Monday night against the host Toronto Maple Leafs.

With their opponent in a dreadful offensive slump, the high-powered Detroit Red Wings would appear to have a prime chance to extend one of the longest home win streaks in team history.
The Los Angeles Kings, though, have been successful recently at Joe Louis Arena.

The Kings weren't able to break out of their scoring slump on Thursday, but they still managed to snap a five-game skid. They might not get as lucky tonight against the high-powered Red Wings.
