DENVER (AP) -- Pavel Datsyuk knocked in a rebound at 4:45 of overtime, and the Detroit Red Wings beat the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 on Friday night to hold onto seventh place in the Western Conference. Datsyuk, who had two goals, ended the game after Henrik Zetterberg put a shot on net that goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere didn't cover. Datsyuk reached out to poke in the puck as defenseman Matt Hunwick was draped all over him. Jimmy Howard had 32 saves, and Gustav Nyquist had a goal for the Red Wings, who are locked in a tight fight for a playoff spot. P.A. Parenteau and Mark Olver scored for Colorado, which gave Detroit all it could handle before losing for the 11th time in 13 games. The rivalry that blossomed between these teams in 1996 has lost steam with Colorado's string of non-playoff seasons. Still, the Red Wings' presence in Denver always adds a charge even if neither team looks like those that combined to win five Stanley Cup titles from 1996-2002. The Red Wings came into Friday having lost three of four. They slipped to seventh place, one point ahead of St. Louis, which has played two fewer games. Detroit is a perennial top seed in the postseason but is in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990. The Avalanche have been reduced to the spoiler role for the third straight season. Colorado is last in the NHL in points and is looking at a high draft pick for the fourth time in five seasons. Despite the different directions, this game was close. Detroit took a 1-0 lead on Datsyuk's power-play goal midway through the first period -- his team-leading 12th goal of the season. Colorado tied it when Olver scored on a breakaway at 11:36, but Nyquist gave the Red Wings the lead back with his second goal 13 seconds later. It stayed that way until the third, when Colorado came out charging. The pressure paid off when Parenteau tipped in a pass from Jamie McGinn at 6:29 to tie it 2-2. The Avalanche continued to dominate in the third and held a 14-1 advantage in shots before Tyson Barrie took a penalty at 14:16. The Red Wings couldn't take advantage of the power play and the game went into overtime. NOTES: Detroit D Kyle Quincey returned after sitting out 10 games because of facial fractures sustained March 15 against Edmonton. ... Henrik Zetterberg earned his 399th career assist. ... Olver's goal was his first point in eight games. He had a goal and assist against Dallas on March 20.

VIDEO: Datsyuk’s OT winner gives the Wings two crucial points against the Avalanche

Pavel Datsyuk had the first and last laugh Friday night as the Detroit Red Wings picked up two crucial points in a 3-2 overtime win against the Avalanche. Datsyuk opened up the scoring in the first period when he picked up his 12th goal of the season on the power play after a nice feed from Johan Franzen. But it was his second goal that turned out to be the game winner in overtime...

Red Wings recall Sheahan, who had an infamous DUI

The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Riley Sheahan from their American Hockey League affiliate. The move was made Saturday, a day before Detroit hosts the St. Louis Blues. Detroit drafted Sheahan in the first round of the 2010 NHL draft and he played in one game for the Red Wings last year. He had 35 points in 67 games this season for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Sheahan pleaded...

The Detroit Red Wings caught a very late flight to Colorado to prepare for tonight's game against the Avalanche (9 PM EDT, FSD/Altitude/97.1 FM) having placed themselves in a particularly desperate situation thanks to their awful showing in a 4-2 loss to Phoenix on Thursday evening. The Wings now sit in 7th place in the Western Conference standings with 41 points, but the 18...

Red Wings Lose Their Edge, 4-2 to Coyotes

The Red Wings put up a pathetic 2nd and 3rd period effort and pay dearly, losing 4-2 to the Coyotes. The Red Wings came out and dominated the entire first period. The pressure in the offensive zone was great and kept providing scoring chances for all of the forward lines. They opened the [...]

As “The Mule” Goes So Do The Wings?

from Ansar Khan of Mlive, “I thought Mule was fantastic in the middle, dominated the faceoff circle, really played well, went head-to-head against (Matt) Duchene all night long and was very good,'' Babcock said. Babcock paired Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg together in an effort to energize the team following Thursday's 4-2 loss at Phoenix. He had Franzen...

Red Wings-Avalanche Preview

The Detroit Red Wings' quest for a 22nd straight playoff berth appears to be going down to the wire. The visiting Red Wings know they probably can't afford to lose to the NHL's worst team Friday night when they try to complete their first season sweep of the Colorado Avalanche in five years. Detroit (18-14-5) is in seventh place in the crowded Western Conference. Eighth...

Talking Red Wings fans down from the ledge after what didn’t happen on deadline day

We’re now more than 24 hours past the NHL trade deadline and by all account Red Wing fans are still running down Woodward acting as if the sky is falling in Hockeytown. Yes the Wings are fighting for their playoff lives and it was another year that Ken Holland didn’t make that big free agent signing or deal at the deadline to fill some of the holes on the roster. And I’m sure...

Red Wings-Avalanche game-day updates: no news on Wings’ scratches due to no morning skate

The Detroit Red Wings basically have to win tonight's game against the Colorado Avalanche (9 PM EDT, FSD/Altitude/97.1 FM) thanks to their awful performance in the team's 4-2 loss to Phoenix last night, and we already know that the Wings will swap out three defensemen for Ian White, Kyle Quincey and Danny DeKeyser. The Avs' morning skate revealed little in the way of...

Red Wings-Coyotes quick take: an earned loss

Contrary to what I'm sure will be suggested over the next 24 hours, the Detroit Red Wings' 4-2 loss to the Phoenix Coyotes was not the result of a team collectively and individually choosing to "screw the pooch" to "send a message" voicing their dissatisfaction with the team's management. The Red Wings did not lose because the ghosts of Jay Bouwmeester...

Red Wings-Blues set-up and overnight report: it’d be a ‘great story’ if the Wings win today

The Red Wings' game against the St. Louis Blues today (12:30 PM EDT, NBC Sports/NHL Network Canada/97.1 FM, and today the Wings are partnering with the Make-A-Wish Foundation at the Joe today) makes for "good TV" and "easy storytelling") for those without a rooting interest, for several reasons: After today's Winter Classic presser, a pair of teams...
