The St. Louis Blues have been without a captain since Eric Brewer was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning on February 18th. After nearly seven months, the position is vacant no longer. David Backes has been named the 20th captain in franchise history.

The 62nd pick in the 2003 draft was acquired by the Blues in a trade sending Cory Stillman to Tampa. With that pick Backes was selected. After three successful seasons at Minnesota State – Mankato where he registered 46 goals and 119 points in 115 WCHA games he transitioned in to the AHL. Spending parts of two seasons with the Peoria Rivermen. The 2007-08 campaign was Backes’ first full tour in the NHL. In which he would quickly carve out a name for himself as one of the fiercest hitters in the league.
