DETROIT -- An offseason of uncertainty began Tuesday at Joe Louis Arena as the Red Wings gathered to take their team photo and clean out their lockers for the season. Two of the Wings' top defensemen have decisions to make and hockey isn't necessarily the overriding factor for either. Captain Nick Lidstrom reiterated that he planned to meet with general manager Ken Holland and then take some time before deciding whether he wants to play for a 21st season. "I feel physically I can still play," Lidstrom said. "I can contribute, but you have to be motivated and you have to have the drive and that's something I will think about. "Training is part of it. I know what I have to do to get ready for a long year. I'm not willing to sacrifice that to have a good summer or take it easy. I know what I have to do and it's a grind to go through, which all of us do in here. Then you hit the grind of season. It's a long year. You play 3-4 games every w...

Your Monday morning downer: another media member with Red Wings ties says Lidstrom will retire

Building upon last night and this morning’s slate of Red Wings discussion, today, 9.71 the Ticket’s Dennis Fithian and Scott Anderson weigh in, the classic Monday morning gut-punch “quarterback” in Ryan Lambert has offered his take on the old Wings’ old problems because they’re so old, I’m not even going to comment on this, and then… MLive’s Ansar Khan offers ten...

Daring Digger: St. James First To Mention Franzen Trade Possibility

Helene St. James is going crazy. It must be the uncommon early Spring boredom that’s got her all redolent.  She’s out there though, right on a limb.  And there’s no hotter topic these days than the streaky Moose. Freep Johan Franzen did not have a good series, scoring one goal in five games despite playing next to Pavel Datsyuk. Franzen has eight years remaining on his contract...

Red Wings at the Worlds: Kindl scoots, Franzen, Zetterberg to join Sweden, Kronwall declines invite

Detroit Red Wings ready to retool roster

The refresh button ought to do.But general manager Ken Holland will be busy, especially if venerable defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom follows through on his annual threat to retire.New Jersey Devils winger Zach Parise and Nashville Predators defenseman Ryan Suter could hit the free agent marketplace. Both would...

Keep Franzen, There's Nobody Better For The Price

Chris Note:  As I am still mourning the loss of a Winged loved one, DetCapC19 came thru with a great guest post.  Enjoy. There’s been a lot said about Johan Franzen over the course of both this season and our recent playoff failure. In particular, I was caught off guard when Babcock seemed to call him out after Game 5 saying, “I don't think we had a lot of help for Pavel”...

Red Wings overnight report: locker room clean-out day provides more questions than answers

After more or less collapsing due to lingering exhaustion on Monday evening, I woke up with a start, with my bizarre dreams and pseudo-nightmares having given way to that inevitable, “You need to get up, you have to update the blog” nag that has become an internal alarm clock, but I rose for my middle-of-the-night sojourn through this morning’s crop of articles related to Monday’s...

Red Wings 2011-12 Season Recap

Red Wings overnight report: on World Championship participants and waiting for Tuesday

We’re not used to this kind of wait for the closure that the Red Wings’ players give the media and their fans by offering a week’s worth of quips and quotes during their locker room clean-out. The Wings at least “made a series” of their defeats against the Sharks, so the team essentially headed home and packed up their gear the next day. This year, the Wings have chosen...

Red Wings need to match Predators' grit

They say the NFL is a copy-cat league, in that the 31 other teams try to emulate what the Super Bowl champion has done the previous year. The NHL isn't quite the same, but it's also true that teams tend to react to their competition by building their own team in such a way as to neutralize their chief rival's strengths. Alas, after the Pittsburgh Penguins won the Eastern...

Detroit Red Wings veteran Pavel Datysuk will vie for his fourth Frank J. Selke Trophy. Datysuk joined St. Louis Blues captain David Backes and Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins as finalists for the award, which goes to the league's best defensive forward. The 33-year-old Datsyuk collected 19 goals and 48 assists in 70 games this season. Backes had a team-leading 24 goals...
