At 10 a.m. on July 1, Jan Hejda was a free agent on the NHL's open market. At 10:20, give or take a couple of minutes, he was a member of the Avalanche.

Stefan Elliott to the minors? Bad decision Very bad. Very, very bad decision to by Avs brass in sending defenseman Stefan Elliott to Lake Erie. As noted before, there are some complications in play here, with Kyle Cumiskey being on injured reserve. Can anyone seriously give me a good argument why Cumiskey should be on this team instead of Elliott at this point? But Cumiskey can’t be sent anywhere because...

Cumiskey put on waivers, must go to Lake Erie if unclaimed The Avs just put defenseman Kyle Cumiskey on waivers. If no other team claims him, the Avs say he will be sent to Lake Erie of the AHL. That will drop the Avs’ roster to 23 players regardless of what happens. It just hasn’t worked out for Cumiskey here of late. Injuries haven’t helped. More later…

Colorado Avalanche waits to name its captain

Avs rookie Landeskog eager for NHL debut (AP)

For his NHL debut, Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog has a few family members flying in from Sweden. Oh, and his boyhood idol, too. Only that's just a coincidence. On the night when Landeskog launches his career, former Avalanche great Peter Forsberg will be in the building to have his sweater retired.

The Avalanche selected winger Gabriel Landeskog with the No. 2 pick in the 2011 NHL draft — and with high expectations. We’ll have to wait to see if he becomes a star in the league. But the Avs have done well in their past with rookies. So, what were the...

Lake Erie Monsters go forward without their top centers

When the Monsters open their fifth season tonight against the Abbotsford Heat, they will be without their first four centers: Patrick Rissmiller, Mark Olver, Joey Hishon and Mike Carman.

Erik Johnson to be third alternate captain, and treasure hunt clues coming soon

Doug Pensinger, Getty Images Avs will give the third ‘A’ to Erik Johnson, at least for tomorrow’s opener against Detroit. So, no captain to start the season for the Burgundy and Blue, just three alternates: Johnson, Paul Stastny and Milan Hejduk. I really think Johnson will be this team’s captain before too long, but when that day comes remains to be seen. OK, as I said yesterday...
