Drafted 229th in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Derek Meech played his junior hockey for the Red Deer Rebels and was apart of the top defensive pairing on the team along side none other than Dion Phaneuf.
Making his NHL debut on December 7, 2006 at the JLA against Central rivals the St. Louis Blues, he went on to play four games that year. While playing for the Grand Rapids that year, Meech was named an All Star after posting 29 points in 67 games with the Griffins.
In 2008, Meech was named Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Broadcasters’ Association.
Despite not playing the minimum 40 games during the regular season, and not even a second in the playoffs, Meech still had his name engraved in the Stanley Cup in 2008 after a successful petition by the Red Wings to the NHL.
