The Detroit Red Wings are really missing Captain Henrik Zetterberg (Photo Credit: Brian Babineau / Getty Images) The Detroit Red Wings have lost five in a row; two on the road, and three at home. Though both Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay are doing well this season, the Red Wings also lost back-to-back games against the bottom-feeding Florida Panthers in that span. It’s easy to blame this losing streak on the numerous injuries that have plagued the red wings over the past few weeks (including Danny Dekeyser, Darren Helm, Jimmy Howard, Stephen Weiss, Justin Abdelkader, and of course Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg), but the fact is, this has happened before. The Wings lost seven in a row in November, five of which came in the shootout or overtime, which begs the question: Why have the Detroit Red Wings fallen back into this familiar pattern? The loss of the aforementioned key players certainly hasn’t helped, but, as I mentioned, even with most of those guys healthy, the team still struggled to win games, especially after regulation has ended (the Wings have only won one game this season that went over 60 minutes). Goaltending hasn’t been an issue despite the rough play from Jimmy Howard, as “backup” goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has posted solid numbers in key games for the Red Wings, and he has been the key player in several games already this season. The Red Wings’ special teams have been solid as well, as they are in the top-ten on the PK and 12th on the power-play. In fact, as of this writing, the Wings sit 4th in the Atlantic Division and 6th in the Eastern Conference. Why, you ask, is this losing streak anything to be worried about? Because the core is aging. This team, once considered among the elite of the NHL and perhaps even the most dominant franchise of all of sports, has consistently lost several games in a row this year while it’s players have failed to stay healthy. It’s been many years since the Red Wings have had to worry, really worry about making the playoffs, and as injuries and losses pileup, young, hungry Eastern Conference teams will begin nipping at the heels of the older, less physically inclined newcomers, the Detroit Red Wings. Dekeyser, Helm, and Zetterberg are all set to return around December 28th. Their respective returns should make a difference in these losing streaks, but speculation at this point is simply speculation. Regardless, something’s gotta give in this organization; and Ken Holland knows it.

Awwww… Petr Mrazek’s Winter Classic pads are too cute!

Former NHLer and Metro Detroit native Brent Johnson tweeted out a picture of what will apparently be Red Wings/Griffins goaltender Petr Mrazek’s pads for the upcoming Winter Classic. And instead of trying to intimidate the opposition, Mrazek is looking to steal the hearts of which ever team (Maple Leafs or Marlies) he plays.

Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek has the cutest holiday pads for outdoor game

As the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs get ready to play in this year’s Winter Classic at the Big House in Ann Arbor, their respective AHL affiliates are also gearing up to play an outdoor game at Comerica Park on December 30th. In anticipation of that matchup – the “Winter Festival” game – Petr Mrazek, goalie for the Grand Rapids Griffins (the Wings’ AHL affiliate...

George’s HBO 24/7 quick take: Show, don’t tell, and Babcock’s himself

I was the son of a probation officer who worked in Detroit in the 70's, 80's and early 90's, I also happen to have to write up a wrap-up of tonight's Wings loss and the Wings' prospects Saturday outings, and I know that the Wyshynskis of the world do a abso-*#$%@&-loutely fantastic job of breaking down the 24/7 phenomenon (no BS on my part--Wysh and company...

Video: Gustav Nyquist Robbed of Goal by Early Whistle

The Detroit Red Wings have been burned plenty in the past by early whistles and the NHL’s ridiculous “intent to blow” rule. Some lazy officiating cost them another goal Sunday vs. the Tampa Bay Lightning. Early in the first period, Gustav Nyquist circled the goal and fired a backhander on Ben Bishop, then tapped home a rebound after Bishop fumbled with the puck. Except …...

Red Wings off-day news: injury updates; on Jurco, Yzerman, the Hockeytown Winter Festival and Frk

I actually managed to get some sleep (rare!) thanks to Paul holding down the fort (and the Wings won't practice today; they will, however, make a significant charitable donation to Detroit's Clark Park rink at 3 PM, and again, the team practices outdoors at Comerica Park on Wednesday), but I've woken up to predictable news regarding the Red Wings' injury front from...

Offense Struggles Again, Red Wings Drop Fourth Straight In 4-1 Loss

The Detroit Red Wings came into tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins having lost three games in a row and searching for offensive answers after scoring only four goals in those three losses. The offense would be an issue once again as the Red Wings only scored one goal once again in being handed their fourth straight loss. In the first, it looked as if offense...

Steve Yzerman attempts to keep expectations low ahead of Red Wings’ Alumni Showdown appearance

Former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman did his best managerial job on Sunday while speaking with the media, not working on making his Tampa Bay Lightning team a better one.
