Petr Mrazek said a few weeks back that he believes he should be in the NHL left season as he has nothing left to prove in the AHL. Bad news, kid … The Detroit Red Wings have made it no big secret that they would like a veteran backup behind Jimmy Howard in net, and they were pretty happy with Jonas Gustavsson in that role during the 2013-14 season — that’s despite Gustavsson missing multiple games with a groin injury. And GM Ken Holland is expected to offer Gustavsson a contract before the netminder hits free agency on July 1, according to MLive’s Ansar Khan. If the Red Wings re-sign Gustavsson it would be a one-year deal, enabling Mrazek to be the full-time backup to Jimmy Howard in 2015-16. Gustavsson earned $1.5 million in 2013-14. He is one of the organization’s several impending unrestricted free agents, perhaps the only one who will be back. … In addition to Gustavsson, the Red Wings might have interest in signing 41-year-old right wing Daniel Alfredsson, who hasn’t declared whether he wants to play another season. But it would be for less than the $5.5 million he earned this past season. Holding onto Alfredsson, if the veteran forward wanted to give it one last go, seemed like a no-brainer for much of the season. Alfredsson struggled late and then missed most of the Bruins series with an injury, though, so the Wings may be having second thoughts about committing to him again. Meanwhile, Gustavsson held up well against Boston with Howard out of the lineup, just as he did when pressed into duty throughout the course of the season. Other than his health, the Wings would have no real concerns about Gustavsson’s game headed into 2014-15 if he sticks around. The only downside, as Mrazek will tell you, is that one of the Wings’ more promising young talents will be buried in the AHL for another year.
