Thanks to Jimmy Howard, Justin Abdelkader and others, the Detroit Red Wings pulled off back-to-back wins in Anaheim over the weekend, winning 5-1 on Friday and 2-1 on Sunday. With those victories Detroit jumped to fifth in the Western Conference and hold a five-point lead on the three teams tied for ninth (San Jose, Nashville and Columbus). The Red Wings are two-thirds of the way through the regular season — Sunday’s game was No. 32 out of 48 during this strike-shortened year. Here’s a closer look at where things stand … If the playoffs started today, the Western Conference matchups would be: No. 1 Chicago vs. No. 8 Dallas No. 2 Anaheim vs. No. 7 St. Louis No. 3 Vancouver vs. No. 6 Los Angeles No. 4 Minnesota vs. No. 5 Detroit Detroit currently sits at 37 points; their max point total for the season right now is 69 — if the Wings finished 16-0-0, they’d pick up an additional 32 points. Such a run would lock them into the postseason at no worse than the seventh seed. The max points each team in the West can finish with this season: Chicago — 87 Anaheim — 82 Minnesota — 74 Vancouver — 72 Los Angeles — 70 St. Louis — 70 Detroit — 69 San Jose — 68 Dallas — 67 Edmonton — 65 Calgary — 64 Columbus — 64 Nashville — 64 Phoenix — 64 Colorado — 60 Detroit’s upcoming week: at Phoenix (Monday), at San Jose (Thursday), Chicago (Sunday)
