After winning their 17th straight home game last night at Joe Louis Arena, I think it is safe to say that the Red Wings are a force to be reckoned with this season.  The Wings now have an NHL-best 67 points, three clear of everyone else. Detroit is also riding a six game overall streak in addition to the 17-gamer at home, and the Wings have been playing gritty hockey and winning close games.  Last night’s game against St. Louis was another great example of the Red Wings getting it done in a hard fought game.  The Wings emerged victorious by a 3-1 count, but not without plenty of controversy. The game finished with a scrum in front of the net after several St. Louis Blues players crashed the net following a shot that was saved by Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard.  Howard took exception to their actions and the scuffle can be seen here.  This all happened after Brad Stuart and Chris Stewart each got majors for fighting in the 2nd period, then Todd Bertuzzi and David Backes were sent off ...

Wings outfight Blues, earn 17th straight home win

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings had to fight to extend their franchise record home winning streak to 17 games. Literally. But in the process of their 3-1 victory, they showed their Central Division rival, the St. Louis Blues (29-13-6), that you have to be a little choosy as to when you fight. The Wings (33-15-1) were not upset they trailed 1-0 late in the first period, they were...

Wings Celebrate Tomas Holmstrom’s 39th Birthday With #17 In A Row At The Joe

Tomas Holmstrom celebrated his 39th birthday by doing what he does best; frustrating goalies, leading to Red Wing goals.  He stood tall in front of Jaroslav Halak, allowing Niklas Kronwall to bang home the goal that sealed it for Detroit late in the third.  Kronwall’s goal gave the Wings a 3-1 advantage, which they would see through to the finish.  The win was Detroit’...

Here’s a leftover bit about Gordie Howe from former teammate Bryan “Bugsy” Watson. “One of the greatest goals I ever seen scored,” starts Bugsy. “Gordie had this long piece of hair, he didn’t have much up there but he had this one long piece that dangled down. Ticker: Steve Schrader: Lidstrom cool behind the scenes, too

As expected, it wasn't "Keeping Up with the Kardashians." But Wednesday's "NHL 36" took a nice behind-the-scenes look at Red Wings captain Nicklas Lidstrom.
