The New Jersey have announced that they will indeed retire Scott Niedermayer’s No. 27 on December 16th at the Prudential Center.
The Devils host the Dallas Stars that night, one of the teams Niedermayer and the Devils defeated en route to their second Stanley Cup. In fact he scored a pivotal goal in the game 6 clincher. Whether this has any significance on the date is pure speculation on my part.
Niedermayer was a part of all three of the franchises Stanley Cup Championships and served as the teams captain for a brief time after Scott Stevens retired.
Niedermayer’s No. 27 will join Stevens’ No. 4 and career Devil Ken Daneyko’s No. 3 as the only numbers to be retired by the franchise. The fact that all three are defenseman is no coincidence as the Devils are well known for their defense first philosophy.
Congratulations to Scott. it’s well deserved.
