The Carolina Hurricanes signed Alexander Semin to a one year deal worth $7 million, causing many people to wonder whether or not it was a good signing by the ‘Canes. Semin sat around for much longer than expected on the free agency market, and could not secure a better offer from any other team, and he actually considered accepting a two year offer from a Russian hockey team. But in came the Hurricanes and gave Semin a big pay day, albeit just for one season. But for a team who already traded for Jordan Staal, the Hurricanes are proving that they are serious about making a push to get back to the playoffs next season. Critics will be quick to point out that Semin’s stats have dipped over the past few seasons with the Washington Capitals. While that may be true, he was still one of the top five offensive free agents on the market this offseason. While $7 million is a lot for one season in the NHL, it is only for one season, limiting the risk to that of a minimal one for Carolina. Semin was known to disappear at some times in Washington, but he also had a knack for coming up big in key situation. With just a one year contract, Semin will still have something to prove if he hopes to have another shot at a more secure future with a more lucrative contract after this season. Whether it comes from the Hurricanes will depend on how well Semin plays this season. Either way, it is a lot of money for a player who has not played as well over the past few seasons. But it is still a low risk high reward possibility in Carolina for the Hurricanes and Semin. And throw in the fact that the team may not be through adding a few key pieces, this could turn out to be the steal of the free agent season for the Hurricanes.
