A pair of gender-related comments have me shaking my head this morning, I suppose proving that hockey is an equal-opportunity sport when it comes to placing one's feet in one's mouth (perhaps on both sides of the digital voice recorder). When Matt Cooke played in the Pittsburgh Penguins' 3-1 win over Ottawa, visiting Canada's capital for the first time since accidentally(?) severing Erik Karlsson's Achilles tendon, he registered an assist and refused to fight Chris Neil. Prior to the game, he confronted the Ottawa Sun's Don Brennan for penning a column entitled "Ottawa Senators' playoff hopes might save Pittsburgh Penguins forward Matt Cooke from a beat-down," so I will delicately state that those of you who don't want to read about parts of the male reproductive tract ought to stick to the headline. Brennan reports, albeit delicately, that Mr. Cooke wished to inform Mr. Brennan of #24's opinion that Brennan did not display a prepond...

Boston announcer compares Matt Cooke to Sirhan Sirhan

We as sports fans are passionate, sometimes overly. Go on any message board or large commenting section about a controversial topic and you will observe anonymous individuals making statements that are more insulting and callous than they are creative. However, this is not something you expect from a commentator or play-by-play man in a sport. Though they may have the same type of...

Ottawa Sun reporter argues with Penguins’ Matt Cooke over genitalia

On Monday evening, the Pittsburgh Penguins traveled to Scotiabank Place to take on the Ottawa Senators in their first trip to the Canadian capital since Erik Karlsson’s Achilles tendon was partially severed by Cooke's skate. While the spotlight should’ve been on the Penguins’ 3-1 victory, the main headline became about an interaction between Cooke and Don Brennan, a reporter...

Should the Pens even dress Matt Cooke tonight?

Reasonable question: If you are the Penguins, do you dress Matt Cooke in Ottawa tonight? Chances are nothing will happen Monday night when the Pens and Sens square off. However, the Senators, their owner and their bizarre fan base seem intent on starting something. Honestly, we wouldn't be surprised if the Senators open the game by showing the results of Eugene Melynk's ...

What's Cooke'ing? Matt Cooke and the Penguins Return to Ottawa

Today is the day Matt Cooke makes his first appearance in the nation’s capital for the first time since his skate blade cut seventy-percent of Erik Karlsson’s Achilles tendon. Tonight the Senators will present their ninth annual Canadian Forces Appreciation night and depending on who you ask, this may be the only ‘presence’ the Senators will have in the building tonight...

Group of Senators fans organizing Matt Cooke Hate Fest

This immediately reminds us of that episode back in the 2009 playoffs when cops were called to some kid's house because he said he was gonna kill Ovechkin or something on a message board. Some site called Red Scarf Union is organizing a Matt Cooke Hate Fest. It actually sounds pretty serious. Wouldn't be surprised to see the local police notified. Read more about...

Ottawa Columnist: Matt Cooke is focused on my Penis

Well the saying " don't tell them dick," just got a new meaning. There is no way we could ever make this up. Don Brennan, who is a complete nutjob, wrote one of the more bizarre columns of all-time shortly after the Penguins beat the Senators. Brennan and his disdain for the Penguins is very well documented.  But even this is a little extreme. Brennan apparenty...

Penguins Thug Matt Cooke Returns to Ottawa

Tonight, the Pittsburgh Penguins travel to Ottawa to play the Senators and this will be the first matchup between the Senators and Penguins since the defenseman Erik Karlsson was injured by a check by Matt Cooke. From reading some of the news articles around the web, it would appear that this is going to be one of those must watch games. One almost has to suspect there will be...

Will Matt Cooke Have A Target On His Back Tonight In Ottawa?

from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun, But despite his pleas of innocence afterwards, Cooke has twice been suspended for hits to the head, and he did end the career of Boston Bruins centre (and Orleans native) Marc Savard. He has said he's changed his ways, but not everybody is convinced. In fact, most still see him as one of the sneakiest and dirtiest players in the league...

Pens beat Sens 3-1 on "Hate Matt Cooke Day" in Ottawa

The Ottawa Senators did everything in their power to exact revenge on Matt Cooke for his hit on Erik Karlsson from earlier in the season. Unfortunately, they forgot to show up for the first 40 minutes of the game and ultimately fell to the Penguins 3-1, Monday night. Pairing the loss with a win by the Winnipeg Jets, the Senators now lead the 8th and final spot in the Eastern Conference...

John Toperzer: The @RealJackEdwards, really? Pens beat Boston, 3-2, Saturday afternoon

poll by twiigs.com If you missed Jack Edwards’s flippant, ignorant comments about Matt Cooke, here they are. The change in Matt Cooke following a suspension for elbowing the Rangers’ Ryan McDonagh 10 games before the end of the 2010-11 season is one of the most remarkable and unbelievable transformations I’ve ever seen in hockey. For a 30-something to...

Game 45: Penguins-Senators Recap

The Ottawa Senators were the team with something to play for but you would have never known it by their approach to the game. This contest was just weird. Everything about it. Even down to the pregame. Matt Cooke told an Ottawa reporter that he had no balls so the guy decided to write a…

Game 46: Penguins-Sabres Preview

Can Jack Edwards please call this game? Steve Ott and Matt Cooke on the ice at the same time. Edwards would be so confused seeing two versions of Sirhan Sirhan on the ice. It would terrify him. I’d say that it would cause him to lose his mind if that was something that hadn’t already…

Ray Shero went after Jack Edwards yesterday

So after Jack Edwards made his now famous comments about Matt Cooke in the first period, he had someone to deal with during the first intermission. Ray Shero. Via the PG: Penguins general manager Ray Shero was visibly enraged when he learned of Edwards' comments and confronted him in the first intermission. Edwards apologized shortly thereafter.

Pittsburgh Penguins Gameday 45 - Ottawa Senators

Pittsburgh Penguins (34-10-0) @ Ottawa Senators (23-15-6) ROOT, SNET-E, TVA, 7:30 pm/et Hell's Kitchen - Kanata, ON Hopefully tonight's contest resembles a hockey game and not the bizarre sideshow that the Ottawa Senators and many of their fans want it to be. We doubt it though. We put the over/under on staged fights at three. Place your bets. Also...

Erik Karlsson miraculously ready to return after suffering a sliced Achilles tendon

When Matt Cooke's skate cut through Erik Karlsson's Achilles tendon back in February, hockey fans and writers universally assumed that it meant the end to the defenseman's 2013 season. Shockingly, Karlsson has not only returned to practicing with his team, but he is reportedly ready to return as soon as Thursday when the Senators battle the Washington Capitals. Karlsson...
