The city of Los Angeles has seen its fair share of game winning shots. From Jerry “Mr. Clutch” West to Kobe “The Black Mamba” Bryant, to Eric “Game Over” Gagne, LA sports fans have been spoiled with some of the best closers in all of sports. Last night, another hero stepped forward, but not in the sport you would expect.
Drew Doughty, star defenseman for the Los Angeles Kings scored a game-winning power play goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets with less than a second left in the game. This is nearly impossible to do in hockey because the puck is considered dead once the final horn blows. However, with the clock winding down and mayhem in front of the Blue Jacket net, Doughty lit the lamp with just .2 seconds left on the clock.
I have been watching hockey my entire life and have never seen anything quite like this. Expect the Kings to ride the momentum from this win throughout the second half of the season.
Doughty was the second overall pick in the 2008 NHL draft and has not disappointed. At the young age of twenty-two, Doughty is quickly becoming one of the best defensemen in the NHL. In 2010, he was named a Norris Trophy Finalist, awarded to the best defensemen in the NHL, making him the youngest person ever nominated for the prestigious award. Doughty was also the youngest player on the Canadian team that brought home the gold in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Although it does not seem possible, Doughty will only continue to get better.
