Anaheim Ducks right wing Devante Smith-Pelly suffered a broken bone in his left foot during the opening game of the world junior hockey championships on Monday night.
Smith-Pelly was injured in Canada's 8-1 win over Finland when he blocked a shot with his skate.
He is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks with a fracture of the first metatarsal bone.
Smith-Pelly had made the Ducks in training camp, but was loaned to Team Canada by Ducks general manager Bob Murray.
A second-round pick in the 2010 draft, he had three goals and two assists in 26 games with the Ducks.
