Saku Koivu practiced with the Ducks for a second consecutive day at Wednesday's morning skate, but doctors are stopping the veteran center from playing in a game because of the effects of the concussion he received Oct. 27 in Columbus.
"I got word this morning," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said. "Each day he's getting better, each day he looks better. But its like any injury, youve got to get cleared by the doctors to play. No matter how good he looks in practice, especially with head injuries youre not going to play."
Koivu, who'll turn 39 on Saturday, has two goals and an assist through 12 games, and the Ducks can use him, given the dearth of scoring beyond the first line during the 0-3-1 road trip they just finished.
He looks really good, said Ducks forward Andrew Cogliano, who usually plays on the third line with Koivu. Not sure whats going on, think hes finishing up with what hes feeling.
He looks good on the ice now. Hes very important to the team, a veteran guy who is very solid in the middle. Great stability, plays in all situations. Hes a big part of the team. Its something youve got to power through. Until hes back, guys have to do a better job around him.
Boudreau said the void becomes more glaring amid a struggle.
"You always miss veteran leadership," Boudreau said. "He's a guy who was captain of the Montreal Canadiens for 11 years. He kills penalties, wins big faceoffs. If I need him, he plays the power play. Hes been a winner everywhere hes gone, so of course you miss guys like that."

What an unfortunate ending for the Anaheim Ducks last night against New Jersey! About two minutes into the overtime period between the Ducks and Devils, Anaheim defenseman Ben Lovejoy attempted to clear the puck to the right boards after a save by goaltender Jonas Hiller. Unfortunately for Lovejoy, the puck bounced off the leg of teammate Corey Perry and back into their own net...
It seems like there have been a lot more own-goals in the NHL this year than in year’s past. The New Jersey Devils tied the game with 61 seconds left to force overtime with the Anaheim Ducks. In overtime, the Devils went down on a two-on-one but it the play was broken up thanks to the phenomenal back check Hampus Lindholm. Unfortunately, Lindholm’s defensive partner Ben...
The Anaheim Ducks have acquired forward Tim Jackman from the Calgary Flames in return for a sixth-round pick in the 2014 NHL Draft.
The 32-year old Jackman has scored 64 points (24 goals), while maintaining a scary -58 +- ratio in 400 games played.
If nothing else, the Ducks are acquiring depth and the type of enforcer who can boost the team’s “tough” attribute. Over the course...
Friday funnies brought to you straight from hockey’s own players, media personnel, and broadcast botches. We’ll be mucking it up every week right here, examining puck ups, puns, tweets, and more! So earlier this week Alex Semin of the Carolina Hurricanes was sitting on the edge of the boards in front of the ‘Canes’ bench waiting for a player on his team to hop off the ice...
Without the benefit of their home crowd in crunch time, the Ducks gave up a decisive third-period goal in Florida, lost a shootout in Carolina and watched Sidney Crosby and Pittsburgh strike for three goals in less than five of the final minutes.
So after that 0-3-1 trip plagued by illnesses, practicing at Honda Center on Tuesday was a welcome experience for the first-place team...

This is one the Ducks should have had. The 4-3 overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils just doesn't feel good.
"It's not losing games that bugs you so much," said Ryan Getzlaf. "It's the way you lose them. We played a pretty solid game, but we've got to be able to be a great team to close those games out."
The Ducks lost in a painful...

With Brian Burkeâs connection to both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks, we knew to expect a few trades between the three teams this NHL season. With that being said, Calgary acquired a 6th round draft selection in 2014 in exchange for forward Tim Jackman.
Constantly rotating in and out of the lineup with the Flames, 32 year...
The Anaheim Ducks return home after a less than thrilling 0-3-1 road trip to host the suddenly decent New Jersey Devils.
New Jersey Devils (7-8-5) at Anaheim Ducks (15-6-2)
The Ducks have been the talk of the town over the first 20 games of the NHL season, but the law of averages, injuries and illness has taken its toll on the club. That said, the Ducks are back in Anaheim...
After a rough trip, the Anaheim Ducks should be eager to return home.
Looking to continue the best home start in franchise history, the Ducks try to avoid a fifth consecutive loss Wednesday night when they face the surging New Jersey Devils.
Prior to leaving for a four-game trip, Anaheim (15-6-2) recorded a fifth consecutive victory and ran its point streak to nine games by improving...
Defensive issues in the third period are a major problem for the Anaheim Ducks.
Perhaps drawing some inspiration from one of the franchise's greatest defensemen can help.
On a night when they'll honor Scott Niedermayer, the Ducks will try to solve their late-game issues and snap their longest losing streak in two years Friday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
After months of silence, former Oilers GM Steve Tambellini was heard from, after a fashion, late Wednesday night, when the Anaheim Ducks announced they had hired him as a part-time pro scout.
Tambellini, 55, served as the Oilers GM from 2008 to 2013 when he was replaced last April by longtime Oilers player and head coach Craig MacTavish.
Tambellini took the wheel of a franchise...
