The Edmonton Oilers have agreed to a deal with stud defenseman, Justin Schultz. The news will be confirmed tomorrow, July 1st, when free agency officially opens. Edmonton was the winner of a 26-team chase and has considerably strengthened their blueline.

The 6’2”, 21-year old from West Kelowna, British Columbia was a second-round draft pick of the Anaheim Ducks and just finished his third-year at the University of Wisconsin. As I recall, the Badgers have produced some quality NHL talents in recent memory including Ryan McDonagh, Dany Heatley, Joe Pavelski, Derek Stepan, and the aforementioned Ryan Suter. Schultz had 91 points in the last two seasons on the Badger’s blueline. Four years have passed and, similar to Blake Wheeler, Schultz was able to sign with any team he wished.

The Oilers have deepened their pool of young talent and finally look to climb out of mediocracy. With the recent string of early 1st round picks, it's about time the Oilers push to the top of the Northeast division, and the addition of Justin Schultz can only help.
