Before the Devils began this five-game road trip in Edmonton Monday night head coach Pete DeBoer said he thought Czech natives Patrik Elias and Jaromir Jagr “should” be able to develop some chemistry playing on a line with Dainius Zubrus.
One of the positives of the first two games of the trip is that it’s looking like DeBoer was right. Jagr and Elias each had a goal and an assist in tonight’s 3-2 overtime loss in Vancouver after both also scored goals in Monday’s 5-4 shootout loss in Edmonton.
“I thought they were very good again tonight” DeBoer said.
Neither Jagr nor Elias was sure what to expect out of playing together. They had never played on the same line on the Czech national team and lasted only one period together in Friday’s 4-3 shootout loss to the Islanders.
Elias is seeing progress though particularly tonight in the second half of a back-to-back set.
“A little better today” Elias said. “I thought it was our best game because we were better on top of the puck. I ska...

...as the Devils struggle through a difficult road trip in western Canada, Brunner has been one of the bright spots. Entering tonight’s meeting with the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome, Brunner leads the Devils with three goals and is tied with Marek Zidlicky as the club’s scoring leader.

Having spent Wednesday doing some team-bonding at Canada Olympic Park the Devils returned today to the business of trying to figure out how to get their first win of the season. At 0-1-3 through their first four games the Devils...
There was no denying that Cory Schneider wanted to beat his former Vancouver Canuck teammates Tuesday night.
More than that though the Devils goaltender wanted to get his team its first win of the season.
Fittingly it came down to a duel between Schneider and his old goaltending partner Roberto Luongo that needed overtime to be decided. Defenseman Jason Garrison gave Vancouver...
Jason Garrison scored at 2:18 of overtime and the Vancouver Canucks defeated the New Jersey Devils 3-2 on Tuesday.
Garrison's shot from the point through traffic beat Cory Schneider in the goaltender's first game against his former team.
Daniel Sedin, with a goal and an assist, and Alexander Edler scored for Vancouver (3-1-0), which got 21 saves from Roberto Luongo who...

The main storyline heading into lat night’s game was Cory Schneider, and his first visit to Rogers Arena since being traded to the New Jersey Devils in June.
The fans made sure Schneids knew he was welcome and they gave him a heart warming standing ovation. Despite most of the seats in that arena being filled by suits who are as quiet as a library, the fans are pretty classy occasionally...
Tuesday night’s four-goal performance served as an introduction to Tomas Hertl for most Americans, but the Sharks rookie is a household name in his native Czech Republic.
Before he even played his first NHL game (he’s played just three to date), the 19-year-old was drawing comparisons to arguably the greatest Czech player of all time, Jaromir Jagr.
Jagr, who has been playing...
