Eric Staal has the 673rd best plus/minus rating in the NHL. In other words he's off to an awful start. Staal is a -14 and has been held to only 5 points so far after 13 games this season. The former 100 point player and the Hurricanes captain is in a huge slump. A week ago Friday, Staal took a stick to his face and suffered a chipped tooth and a cut on his nose. The stick came close to hitting him in the eye. Staal still refused to wear a visor. Many people have wondered whether his horrible start has had to do with the fact that his brother Marc still hasn't played since getting by Eric last year.“I’m worried about (him)," hockey analyst Pierre McGuire said about Staal's horrible start. "There’s something wrong. He’s not the same player.”

Hurricanes need Staal to produce

Raleigh, NC -- The Carolina Hurricanes have been hanging on, but it's unlikely the team can keep it up much longer without Eric Staal getting more involved on the scorer's sheet. Staal's frustration poured out on the ice during a 5-1 loss at home to the Washington Capitals on Friday night, resulting in a few scrums and a penalty. It didn't result in a goal or even...

Capitals can't sleep on slumping Hurricanes captain Eric Staal

RALEIGH, N.C. — Eric Staal looked very much like an All-Star when he put up two goals and an assist for the Carolina Hurricanes on Oct. 8 at Verizon Center. Fewer players have had a more frustrating stretch since. Staal has just one goal and one assist in the 10 games ...

Jiri Tlusty: stop-gap or solution?

When you take a look at the scoring chance numbers for the Carolina Hurricanes this year, you'll find a couple names near the top of the list that might surprise you. One of those is former first round draft pick and Toronto Maple Leafs cast-off Jiri Tlusty. I, along with many others, wondered if Tlusty would even make the team out of camp this year and even if he did, it was...

Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Carolina Hurricanes 11/1/11 Scoring Chances

Carolina continues to play well at home as they were able to avenge their opening night loss to the Lightning by beating them 4-2 last Tuesday. Once again, we saw the Canes get off to a very strong start but run into a few road blocks along the way that could have cost them the game. The difference this time is that instead of letting all of the negative events snowball like they...
