This is becoming repetitive news, but Evgeni Malkin did it again he was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week.   This is only the second time this season that he’s been named First Star, he’s been a Second once and Third Star twice.  In the last week Malkin has added 5 goals and 4 assists to his league leading 97 points, during which time the Penguins went 3-1-0.  Steven Stamkos is trailing 10 points behind him for the Art Ross Trophy and Malkin has played 6 less games than Stamkos.  It’s also worth noting that Malkin is averaging a staggering 1.43 points per game.

The Penguins hit the 100 point mark for the second year in a row and have a chance to overtake the New York Rangers for the first spot in the Eastern Conference.  With 7 games left anything is possible.  This week the Penguins have two games against the Islanders and finish off the week with the Buffalo Sabres who are fighting for the playoffs.  But next week will be the true challenge when the Pens finish the regular season at home against the Flyers, at Boston and home against the Rangers and the Flyers again.  We’ll need Malkin to be the First Star again that week for sure.

Penguins D Lovejoy out 3-4 weeks with knee injury

Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ben Lovejoy will miss 3-4 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Tuesday. Lovejoy injured the knee in the first period of a 5-2 win over New Jersey on Sunday. The injury means Lovejoy would likely miss Pittsburgh's first-round playoff series. Coach Dan Bylsma says defenseman Kris Letang will not play on Tuesday against...

The magic number is 13

The Rangers and Penguins are seemingly locked in what will be an epic battle for first place in the Atlantic Division and Eastern Conference. The Rangers currently lead the Penguins by a single point, both with seven games remaining in the season. While many are panicking about how the Penguins could catch up so quickly (more on that in a second), the Rangers have two distinct advantages...

Penguins March on Devils - Pittsburgh Crushes New Jersey

After a devastating shootout loss at home to Toronto, the New Jersey Devils looked to start fresh and create a late-season win streak, starting in Pittsburgh against a tough Penguins team. The return of center Travis Zajac boosted some motivation (as his presence was dearly missed). Unfortunately though, once again, the Devils did not find an answer to the Penguins offense and...

Islanders-Penguins Preview

With Sidney Crosby scoring goals again, the Pittsburgh Penguins appear back on track after a rare loss. That likely does not bode well for the New York Islanders, who have not won in Pittsburgh in more than four years. Trying to win 11 in a row at home for the first time in 21 years, Crosby and the Penguins have a chance to take over the Eastern Conference lead Tuesday night with...

Richard Cloutier: Word!

I apologize for the lack of Oilers/Florida blog last night. My day job keeps getting in the way of my hobby farm. Here's some random thoughts: Word! - Evgeni Malkin. The only reason he's having the season he is is because at the beginning of the season, I said in a blog he was a Top 10 player in the NHL, but wasn't a Top 5 player. Thanks for making me look stupid...

The Atlantic Division is the best division in hockey

Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Henrik Lundqvist, Brad Richards, Claude Giroux, Jaromir Jagr, Ilya Kovalchuk, Patrick Elias, John Tavares... If you made an all-star team out of just players in the Atlantic Division, boy would they be good. The Atlantic Division is easily the best division in the NHL. The top four teams in the Eastern Conference when it comes to point totals are all...
