Men’s tennis says goodbye to the San Francisco Bay Area this weekend. After a tenure of nearly a century and a quarter, the ATP event in San Jose will end this weekend.  The second-oldest tennis tournament in the United States, the SAP Open lately represented the only outpost of the men’s game in the Bay Area, which has hosted a successful WTA event early in the US Open Series for the last four decades. As historic as it is, the end of men’s tennis in the Bay Area—for now—comes as scant surprise to someone like me who once attended the SAP Open.  Unlike the WTA Stanford tournament, which regularly attracted champions from around the world, San Jose had declined steadily over the last several years as it languished in the lowest tier of the ATP’s 250/500/1000 system.  With each year, fewer and fewer of Silicon Valley’s citizens trickled through the turnstiles of the HP Arena.  Less committed to tennis than their predecessors was the tournament’s new management, meanwhile, which grew ...

San Jose goalie's new mask is horrifying

This is the new headgear for Sharks goalie Thomas Greiss. I have no clue what in the world that demon creature is supposed to be. Is it a zombie? Is it a werewolf? Is it a zombie werewolf? Maybe Ryane Clowe having a bad day? All I do know is my pants are now a little more damp than they were. [photo via @kkurzcsn]

Huh? San Jose Sharks get 6 RBI and 2 HR from two players, still lose? (pic)

Come on, San Jose Sharks. What gives? Graphical errors during sports broadcasts are not a new phenomenon. Take the one above from the postgame coverage of the San...

NHL Fights: Joe Thornton Vs. Jonathan Toews In A Rare Rumble

Joe Thornton vs. Jonathan Toews. In a hockey fight. Let me repeat that for you. Joe Thornton vs. Jonathan Toews in a hockey fight. How rare is that? IT’S REAL F-ING RARE.  Toews had, until last night, just two fights in the NHL. TWO. Let me repeat, Jonathan Toews had just two fights in the NHL until last night when he instigated Joe Thornton (his NHL fight card). Both are captains...

Jonathan Toews and Joe Thornton square off in superstar bout

It’s not often that you see two superstars pair off to go at it with each other, but that’s exactly what happened on Friday night when the Chicago Blackhawks took on the San Jose Sharks.  Sharks captain Joe Thornton has 26 fights under his belt now, and this gives Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews three total fights for his career.  Toews was incensed the entire shift and was...
