The Canes put in their first full practice today under new coach Kirk Muller, going about an hour at Raleigh Center Ice, and there wasn't much down time. Muller had the players at a fast pace, with a lot of end-to-end skating and some physical play. "It was uptempo, a lot of pace, a lot of focus on short passes, execution, and just supporting each other," captain Eric Staal said. "It was a good pace." That's the way Muller says he wants it, although maybe not for an hour. "Today went a little longer than I would want to but we've got a little more to cover," Muller said. "I want them to save their energy for the games and just have a good, high quick-tempo stuff typically in practices. "It's going to be just peck away each day. Take specifics of certain parts of the game and try to get a little bit better. I thought they were ready to go today and we covered some good areas." Muller said before practice he and the team wat...

Can Muller make short-term impact on PP, Staal?

We're less than an hour away from the press conference introducing Kirk Muller as the Hurricanes' new head coach, and with a game tomorrow against the Florida Panthers -- one of his former teams -- he won't have much time to get his feet on the ground. In the short term, though, there are two areas where he may be able to have a major, immediate impact on the Hurricanes...

No disciplinary action for Joslin

The NHL will take no disciplinary action against Canes defenseman Derek Joslin for his hit on Florida Panthers forward Kris Versteeg in Tuesday's game. Versteeg was hit in the head by Joslin late in the first period of the Panthers' 3-1 victory and left the ice bloodied. No penalty was called. A disciplinary hearing was set for Wednesday for Joslin to determine if Joslin...

Marc Staal Expects To Be Back This Season, Admits Mishandled Situation Last Season

Injured New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal skated again today, but this time he wasn't alone as he skated with Mike Rupp this morning in Carolina.  Following the workout Staal met with reporters for the first time since September 30.  Here are the highlights via Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants: On how long has he been symptom-free: “It’s been a couple of weeks. I...

Kirk Muller, the great communicator, faces his Eric Staal problem

When Kirk Muller met the media for the first time as Carolina Hurricanes coach on Monday, the unavoidable subject of captain Eric Staal's struggles eventually came up. "Everyone's human," said Muller. "[Staal] is a workhorse.  He has proven that he can be one of the elite players in the game." Staal enters Tuesday night's game against the Florida...

Marc Staal confident he'll play this season

Marc Staal returned to the scene of "The Hit" for the first time today, taking the ice at the RBC Center. The New York Rangers defenseman has not played this season because of post-concussion symptoms. Staal was injured after a big collision with brother Eric Staal of the Hurricanes in the Feb. 22 game at the RBC Center, but did return to play later in the season and in...

Canes get first feel for new man in charge

Kirk Muller (see photos) took to the ice today for the first time with his new team at the RBC Center, and in many ways it appeared to be just another morning skate for the Carolina Hurricanes. It was anything but, of course. It was a new day and all eyes were on Muller, who was hired Monday by the Hurricanes to replace fired coach Paul Maurice (see photos), and is charged with righting...

Crosby to concussed Rangers D Staal: 'Be patient'

Sidney Crosby certainly knows a thing or two about concussion. With that in mind, the Pittsburgh Penguins captain offered his advice to concussed New York Rangers defenseman Marc Staal. "I think (Staal should) be patient. That’s the most important thing," Crosby said. "There are days you feel really good and there are days it feels you really haven’t progressed...

Game 27 Preview: Rangers at Hurricanes

New York Rangers (13-5-3) at Carolina Hurricanes (8-14-4)RBC Center 7 p.m.TV: FS-Carolina, MSG If there's one thing that annoys me more than having to watch my team play poorly, it's the media coming up with bogus narratives to explain why "x team/player is struggling." Before Maurice was fired, the narrative circulating around the Hurricanes was that Eric Staal...

Kris Versteeg not a fan of Derek Joslin’s elbow, Panthers’ schedule

In the first period of their game against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night, Florida Panthers leading scorer Kris Versteeg (yup, still strange to write that) skated down the middle of the Canes' offensive zone with the puck. That's where he met Derek Joslin; or, more to the point, Derek Joslin's elbow: From On Frozen Pond, the Panthers and Versteeg were none too...

Hurricanes firing of Maurice hardly a suprise

Raleigh, NC --- The firing of Carolina Hurricanes coach Paul Maurice on Monday morning wasnt much of a surprise. A change was bound to happen, it was only a question of when. Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford and Maurice have a close relationship that extends some beyond hockey, so this was going to be handled with respect for Maurice, who has given the franchise much of his...

Monday’s coaching firings effect Predators organization…

No, Barry Trotz has not been fired. But two NHL teams did say “peace out” to their bench bosses this morning. The Washington Capitals fired Bruce Boudreau after four seasons and the Carolina Hurricanes severed ties with Paul Maurice for the second time. It’s the Hurricanes move that impacted the Predators. Maurice went 116-100-30 in his second stint manning the benches in...

NHL coaches again on the hot seat

Alex Ovechkin has dropped from MVP seasons to an ordinary one for Washington. In Carolina, Eric Staal is stuck in a seasonlong slump. Two of the NHL's best players get the rest of the season to try to turn around their numbers and revert to form. Their coaches weren't so lucky.
