Canes general manager Jim Rutherford said today rookie defenseman Justin Faulk would not be participating for Team USA in the 2012 World Junior Championship in Calgary and Edmonton.
Rutherford said last week the team was still considering allowing Faulk, who competed for Team USA in the 2011 WJC, to play. But he said today that Faulk was needed with the Canes.
Rutherford said Faulk had become "an integral part of our team" and that it was "in the best interest of our organization and his development" to stay with the Canes.
Faulk, 19, has played in 18 games for the Canes, with a goal and three assists. The South St. Paul, Minn., native said last week that it would be a honor to play for the U.S. again but that he would leave the decision up to Canes management.
He was second among U.S. defensemen in scoring with four points in the 2011 World Junior in Buffalo as the U.S. took the bronze.
