Seems like things are finally getting serious in the NHL negotiations, folks – the NHL and the NHLPA have agreed to meet with federal mediators to help with the negotiation process towards a new Collective Bargaining Agreement. "We are able to confirm that we have agreed to a request by the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service to engage in meetings with the Union that will involve the participation of Federal Mediators," NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said. "While we have no particular level of expectation going into this process, we welcome a new approach in trying to reach a resolution of the ongoing labor dispute at the earliest possible date. Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh and Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney were assigned to serve as the mediators between the NHL and NHLPA. The FMCS was used in the labor disputes in both the National Basketball Association and National Football League last year. Although the FMCS helps bring a neutral, third party outlook to the discussions, the NHL and NHLPA don’t have to accept any of their suggestions. They are aiding in the discussions – not helping solve the NHL problems. Mediation is a great way to overcome obstacles in negotiations and help keep the flow of discussion moving – something that these CBA negotiations could definitely use. No more stalling!
