Matt Carle is the second-ranked defenseman in NHL Free Agency. As the Flyers wait to see if Zach Parise and Ryan Suter accept their offers, other options may be beginning to dry up.

Free Agency in the NHL is entering day 4 on this 4th of July holiday. There have been rumors o fireworks, but none have come to fruition just yet. As the Philadelphia Flyers and the rest of the NHL wait to see where Zach Parise and Ryan Suter will next lace up their skates, other options are beginning to disappear for the Flyers.

Hall of Fame Winger Jaromir Jagr, the man who helped develop a young Flyers core last year decided he could wait no longer and signed a 1-year contract to play for the Dallas Stars for $4.5 million. Jagr was on hold with the Flyers while the team waited to hear whether or not the $200 million they have reportedly offer Parise and Suter would be accepted. Now, he’s gone.

Matt Carle is ranked as the second best defenseman on the market, behind Ryan Suter. He too, is on hold with the Flyers. It may not be much longer before he decides to sign elsewhere also.

You have to wonder if this waiting is the most prudent thing for the Flyers to do. The Flyers have an obvious need for a defenseman. Matt Carle is a solid, albeit, no frills type of defenseman. He has stated his desire to return to the team and there was a point a few weeks ago, that it appeared to be a done deal. Now everything is in flux.

It is a safe assumption that if neither Parise or Suter land in Philadelphia, the Flyers will try to fill their needs in other ways. The Flyers have been linked to Rick Nash for months, and recently Bobby Ryan has popped up on the radar. The problem with going after a Nash or a Ryan is that they are only available through trade. Both deals have been rumored to include young talent like Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier whom the Flyers would prefer not to have to give up. Additionally, if the Flyers wait much longer, and Matt Carle also flies the coop, they’d need to deal for a defenseman too.

At some point soon, something is going to have to give. The Flyers are being held hostage here, and it may only be a matter of time before the Flyers have to move on. Whether its because Parise and Suter reject their offers, or because the Flyers can’t wait any longer remains to be seen.

For now, fireworks have been put on hold so far on this 4th of July.
