There are times in sports when people see optical illusions, mind tricks that makes things seem much worse than they really are. Luckily, there are stats that can help disprove common misnomers.
To the common Philadelphia Flyers fan, one would venture a guess that their defense was incredibly poor in the 2012 season. Stats sure as hell could not dispute that claim. The Flyers blue liners tallied 214 of Philadelphia’s 301 minutes on the penalty kill, second worst in the league. The entire Winnipeg Jets team spent just 218 minutes a man down.
Teams playing against the Flyers averaged 2.90 goals a game, eighth highest in the league. While most would pin that on the oft-criticized Ilya Bryzgalov, it’s hard to perform well with what was a revolving door of defensemen in front of him.
