Alex Tanguay scored on a one-timer 1:07 into overtime to lead the Calgary Flames past the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-3 on Thursday night in a battle of Western Conference cellar-dwellers. Shortly after Columbus threatened on two shots by Fedor Tyutin, the Flames had an odd-man rush and Jarome Iginla saucered a cross-ice setup to Tanguay, who unloaded from the right dot. Roman Cervenka, Mikael Backlund and Lee Stempniak scored for the Flames, who won their second in a row. Jiri Hudler and T.J. Brodie each had two assists. Mark Letestu had a goal and two assists for the first three-point game of his 145-career, while Vinny Prospal had a goal and an assist and Matt Calvert also scored for the Blue Jackets. The teams came into the game with the fewest points in the Western Conference, Calgary (2-3-2) last with six and Columbus (3-6-1) 14th with seven. The Flames were without two of their top players. The Future Of The Flames

from Eric Duhatschek of the Globe and Mail, With Kiprusoff sidelined, the Flames get a glimpse into a future they know is coming, maybe sooner than expected. Kiprusoff has just a year left on his contract, one of those “back-diving” deals the recent NHL-NHLPA labour dispute keyed on. In 2013-14, his salary drops to $1.5-million (U.S.) from $5-million. It is unclear if...

Kiprusoff Listed As Day-To-Day

Calgary, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today that Miikka Kiprusoff (lower body) is day-to-day. "In the second period I felt some discomfort in the lower body area. During the intermission, it was decided that I not return to play. I really believe that this is a short term injury and over the next days, I'll work toward being ready as soon as possible."

Blue Jackets F Dubinsky fined, not suspended

Blue Jackets forward Brandon Dubinsky was fined $10,000 Wednesday, the maximum allowed under the new NHL collective bargaining agreement, for boarding Los Angeles defenseman Rob Scuderi in Columbus' 4-2 loss to the Kings on Tuesday. He will not be suspended. The incident occurred at 11:29 of the second period, and set off a rash of penalties. Not long after, Dubinsky and Los...

Brett Lebda Signs PTO

I'm late on this but the Binghamton Senators have inked Brett Lebda to a professional tryout (PTO). When reached for comment, Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said, “Our depth is no longer the envy of the league.” Kidding aside, I wouldn’t read too much into Lebda’s signing or analyze what it could mean. At this stage of his career, it probably means nothing...

Jackets putting "4th" the effort

Any coach will tell you its an asset and a luxury when he can trust his fourth line to provide energy, defensive responsibility, and the occasional goal. It makes the entire team more balanced, and better. For the past several Blue Jackets games, the line of Derek MacKenzie, Mark Letestu, and Jared Boll have been giving head coach Todd Richards exactly that. The line has scored two...

CBJ Foundation making up for lockout losses

The NHL lockout left many businesses and individuals without a regular flow of cash that comes only when the club is playing. Thats also true for the charities that rely on in-game fundraising. We typically will evaluate for our cash-on-hand to grant at about this time of year, said Jen Bowden, executive director of the Columbus Blue Jackets Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the...
