What happens when a once-mighty team fails to consistently develop good young players? That franchise ends up spending lots of money on middling veterans while hanging around the periphery of the Stanley Cup playoff race year after year.Such is the fate of the Calgary Flames. They are on the outside of the Western Conference race looking in, despite catching fire of late.Should this franchise start over from scratch, once and for all? Should this team move captain Jarome Iginla as part of that rebuilding process?Iginla rejects that notion.“I think we’re going to be a playoff team. I believe that,” he told the Calgary Sun. “I don’t want speak about the Eastern Conference, but the Western Conference? It’s tight. I don’t think there’s any heavy, favorite front-runner, so I think if you make it into the playoffs, you’ve got a shot.”Well, we’ll see. Beyond Iginla the team lacks scoring punch. This franchise needs a influx of fresh talent, which is why the Iginla trade rumors surfaced again. Any contender would love to have Iginla and most would offer a nice package to get him. “I haven’t kept up on that,” he told the Sun. “I don’t know where I’m supposed to be going or who’s going where or what. The focus has totally been on getting better here, and we need to put a streak together and get in the playoffs ourselves.” At the moment the Flames appear prepared to keep Iginla. Instead, it looks like Columbus will be lead the Great Sell-Off by putting Rick Nash and Jeff Carter up for grabs.
