New York Islanders
Oliver Lauridsen and Danny Briere scored goals to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to 2-1 win over the New York Islanders on Thursday.
Lauridsen scored his second career NHL goal on a slap shot high above the circle late in the third period to lift the Flyers to a win in their home finale. They missed the playoffs for the first time since 2007.
John Tavares scored for the playoff-bound Islanders. The Islanders are headed to the playoffs for the first time in six seasons and failed to earn a point for the first time in 12 games.
With playoff positioning still up for grabs, the Islanders dropped to seventh in the Eastern Conference after the Rangers' overtime win over Carolina.
The Islanders clinched an Eastern Conference playoff spot in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Hurricanes on Tuesday night.
The Islanders end the season on a five-game road trip and finish Friday at Buffalo.
As always, the Flyers had expectations of a deep playoff run. But injuries that decimated the defense and...
BEST OF MAXIM
Philadelphia Flyers goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov has already carved out a niche as one of the more quirky athletes in sports. After all, this is a guy who trained as a cosmonaut in Russia during the NHL lockout -- and that might not be the weirdest thing he's done.
But Bryzgalov's latest antics, which took place in the Flyers' locker room on Wednesday, may be his best,...
NHLTags: Mike KnubleI don’t know how other coaches handle the media, but I’ve sat in enough conferences with Philadelphia Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette to know that you don’t ask him questions about the line-up. You especially don’t ask him about goaltenders.
After the second game of the 2011 Stanley Cup quarterfinals against...
Jaromir Jagr has been around the NHL for 19 seasons now, and over that time he’s become a pretty popular figure in the game. But more than that, Jagr’s gotten attention for not only his hockey skills and demeanor, but that sweet mullet from earlier in his career, too. On Tuesday the Bruins were down in Philadelphia, and it seems the hockey faithful in Pennsylvania still appreciate...
With nothing but pride on the line and a visibly smaller-than-normal crowd on hand at the Wells Fargo Center, the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the New York Islanders 2-1 in their last home game of the 2013 season.
Ilya Bryzgalov got the start in net, sand saved 21 out of the 22 shots he faced for his 19th win of the season. He wasn't tested often, but that's a testament to...
from Steven Marcus of Newsday,
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, echoing Islanders owner Charles Wang's comments last week, said he would like the Islanders to leave for their new home in Brooklyn "as soon as possible," but said the team is prepared to play out its lease, which expires after the 2014-2015 season.
"I'd like to see them in the newer...
For the first time since 2007, there will be playoff hockey at the Nassau Coliseum this spring.
After finishing dead last in the Atlantic Division, the Islanders clinched a playoff spot last week and currently have a hold the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference with two games to play. The Isles are young and talented up front — John Tavares ranks third in the NHL with 27 goals...
With the Islanders (55 pts.) picking up a point in their 2-1 shootout loss to the Sabres last night they moved into the 6th seed ahead of the Rangers (54 pts.) and Senators (54 pts.). The Rangers now need a minimum of one point today to clinch at least the 7th seed.
The sixth seed is also a real possibility but there's a lot of scenarios that need to playout:
I set my DVR to record “The Biggest Loser” and it keeps recording Philadelphia Flyers games! But seriously… As representatives of Pittsburgh Penguins nation, do you feel sorry for the Philadelphia Flyers abysmal season? They struggled with injuries, and poor play. Really nothing went right, and now they will be watching the Playoffs on TV. [...]
NHLTags: Danny BriereNew York IslandersOliver LauridsenPeter LavioletteYou watch a game unfold like that between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders tonight and wonder, “Where was this team three months ago?”
Many Flyers fans were probably quietly hoping- alright, let’s not kid ourselves, vocally and belligerently pleading...
Though the New York Islanders have ensured the end of their playoff drought, they don't exactly appear to be heading into the postseason on a roll.
They'll get once more chance to pick up some momentum Friday night as they finish a five-game road trip against the Buffalo Sabres in both teams' regular-season finale.
New York has fared well recently in Buffalo, winning...
Tonight the New York Islanders regular season comes to a close, as does their 5-game road trip, which they are 2-1-1 on currently. They are playing the Buffalo Sabres at 7 PM. There are many scenarios that could still play out as the season winds down, but the Islanders do not hold their seeding fate [...]
Six years have passed since the New York Islanders last made the playoffs or the Philadelphia Flyers failed to qualify.
Both of those runs are now over.
Two days after their postseason drought officially ended, the Islanders look to maintain their April point streak Thursday night and beat a Flyers team in the midst of a solid stretch that's coming far too late.
Call it a win for the Flyers and Boston charities.
Make it one blown opportunity for the Bruins to stand alone atop the Northeast Division.
Matt Read and Oliver Lauridsen scored 7 seconds apart to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 victory over the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night.
The Bruins are second in the Eastern Conference and lead the division. But the Bruins and Montreal...
